What you would seeLo que verías

Against a deep black background, twenty-one luminous mosaics are arranged in three rows, each made of small reddish and orange squares forming irregular blotches like pixelated constellations. At the top, the title Kepler's/K2's Fields of View glows in thin coppery letters, flanked on the left by the National Aeronautics and Space Administration logotype and on the right by the circular blue NASA insignia. Each mosaic is labeled below in tiny white type: Kepler Field Light, K2 - C0 through K2 - C19 Last Light. The mosaics vary in density and brightness; some are faint and scattered, others intense, with K2 - C9 at the center standing out for its very bright core in white, yellow and fiery red tones suggesting a dense stellar concentration. The light appears grainy, with textures of cosmic dust and diffuse glimmers. At the bottom, two blocks of explanatory text in white and the address www.nasa.gov complete the composition, evoking a gallery of windows onto the universe.

How to look at itCómo mirarla

Scan the full grid of twenty-one fields first to notice their shapes and differences. Then pause on the central panel K2 - C9, the brightest one, and see how its intense glow alters the reading of the whole. Finally read the labels and the lower text to understand that each blot is a real stellar map.

ContextContexto

This is a scientific illustration by Wendy Stenzel of NASA Ames Research Center, with science content by Jeff Coughlin, Kenneth Mighell and Doug Caldwell, published on April 16, 2020 and available in the NASA Image and Video Library. According to source data, the Kepler space telescope surveyed twenty-one patches of sky during its nine and a half years of operation, collecting high-precision brightness measurements of over half a million stars. These data facilitated the discovery of thousands of exoplanets and provided insight into many other astrophysical phenomena. Each panel represents one of those observed fields, including the original Kepler mission and its K2 extension.

Curious detailDato curioso

The Kepler telescope discovered more than 2,600 confirmed exoplanets by measuring tiny dips in brightness as a planet transited in front of its star, a method that revolutionized the search for worlds beyond the solar system.

  1. How does it feel to see the sky fragmented into twenty-one windows instead of a single continuous image?¿Qué te hace sentir ver el cielo fragmentado en veintiún ventanas en lugar de una sola imagen continua?
  2. How does your sense of the universe's scale change when you consider that each luminous dot is an observed star?¿Cómo cambia tu idea del tamaño del universo al pensar que cada punto luminoso es una estrella observada?

The conservatorLa restauradora

From my perspective as a restorer I focus on the materiality of this digital scientific illustration by Wendy Stenzel for Ames Center. I see twenty-one mosaics on an absolute black that works as a support, each made of reddish, orange and white pixels that simulate grainy cosmic dust. I notice the thin copper lettering and the small white labels K2 - C0 to C19. I am interested in how the contrast between the #000000 background and the warm glows is preserved without losing legibility.

The amateur astronomerEl astrónomo aficionado

As a sky enthusiast, this piece makes me feel I am looking through twenty-one different windows. I know Kepler observed for nine and a half years more than half a million stars to measure their brightness and hunt for exoplanets. Each panel is a campaign, from the Kepler Field to K2 - C19 Last Light. I love the central panel K2 - C9 with its intense white and yellow core, it looks like a stellar swarm where a new world could be hiding.

The eight-year-oldLa niña de ocho años

They look like twenty-one glowing cookies in space! Each little square has red and orange dots like sprinkles. The one in the middle, K2 - C9, shines a lot with white and yellow, like a campfire at night. At the top it says Kepler's in copper colored letters and there are two little NASA badges. I imagine each window is a place where the telescope looked for hidden planets playing hide and seek.
