What you would seeLo que verías
A black-and-white photograph with a fine film grain, taken from a slightly elevated frontal viewpoint. At the center of the frame a saucer-shaped craft hovers, viewed head-on, supported by three tall, slender struts bolted to the wind tunnel floor. The vehicle is strikingly symmetrical, with a thick, polished outer rim that catches the overhead light, a domed central top and a darker underbelly where panels, rivets and mechanical bays are faintly visible. The three main struts are long and rectangular in section, with small diagonal braces at their feet, suggesting adjustable height. The background is dominated by the immense curved throat of the wind tunnel, a vast, smooth, dark wall that dwarfs the craft, with an exposed steel lattice gantry and open overhead doors at the top right letting in soft diffuse light. In the immediate foreground a slightly out-of-focus tubular rail runs across the bottom edge. Lighting is high contrast, creating sharp specular highlights along the Avrocar rim and deep shadows beneath it, emphasizing textures of brushed metal, matte painted tunnel walls and a worn, streaked floor. The monumental scale of the facility makes the few-meters-wide disc look both futuristic and fragile.
How to look at itCómo mirarla
Start with the bright ring around the saucer edge, then trace down the three thin legs to the platform. Step back to take in the huge dark arch of the tunnel that frames it, to feel the scale. Notice how the overhead light sculpts the metal while the tunnel recedes into shadow, making the craft appear to levitate.
ContextContexto
The source data describes this as a front view of the Avrocar on variable-height struts inside the 40 by 80 foot wind tunnel at NASA Ames, with overhead doors open, photographed on January 25, 1961, by Dave West. The Avrocar was an experimental vertical take-off project first developed by Avro Aircraft Limited for the U.S. Air Force and later evaluated by NASA for aerodynamic behavior and stability. Testing in the large Ames tunnel allowed full-scale airflow studies. The image is part of the NASA Image and Video Library, credited to NASA/ARC and listed under the Space and Science category as a scientific photograph. No further anecdotal details are provided in the source.

Curious detailDato curioso
The Avrocar was intended to fly on a cushion of turbojet exhaust like a flying Jeep, but it suffered from severe instability beyond ground effect and never achieved sustained free flight before cancellation.

Notice the contrast between the polished bright rim of the Avrocar and the deep black under its belly. This grainy, high-contrast black and white photograph from 1961 lets us read textures: the polished metal reflecting overhead light, the matte paint of the wind tunnel and the scratched floor. I focus on the rivets and hatches under the belly, and the three rectangular supports with diagonal bracing. The monumental curved background of the 40 by 80 foot tunnel and the slightly blurred tubular railing in the foreground speak of scale and a carefully staged ground test.

It looks like a flying saucer but it is very down-to-earth engineering. This circular and symmetric Avrocar, with a domed central cupola, hovers held by three variable-height supports in the center of NASA Ames wind tunnel. It was an experimental vertical takeoff prototype from the Cold War, developed by Avro for the U.S. Air Force and evaluated by NASA in 1961. The image, taken on January 25 by Dave West with the upper doors open, captured full-scale aerodynamic tests. The harsh light creates deep shadows that emphasize its disk shape.

It looks like a spaceship from a movie! It is round like a giant plate and it is floating in the middle of a huge tunnel. It is not really flying, three tall metal legs with little crossed braces underneath hold it up. It has a dark belly below and a little dome bump on top. I like the shiny rim that reflects the light and the blurry railing in front. The tunnel looks gigantic, like a metal cave, with a little walkway with grids on the right. It is so big an entire airplane could fit inside!
