What you would seeLo que verías

A small, angular spacecraft hangs slightly below the center of a square frame, seen from above and at a slight angle, with the Earth filling almost the entire background. The Lunar Module has a faceted, irregular body: its upper section is made of bright silver and matte black panels that catch the sunlight unevenly, while the lower part glows with copper, amber and reddish-gold insulation. Near the top is a dark oval opening, and below it two dark triangular windows and small round details give the machine a faintly face-like quality. Four thin landing legs splay outward like an insect's; three disc-shaped footpads are clearly visible, with delicate probe rods dangling beneath them like whiskers. Small antennas and struts protrude from the sides. Behind it, the Earth is a soft blue-grey field scattered with broken white clouds, brighter and paler toward the left edge. There is no horizon line. In the lower right corner, a large black diagonal shape intrudes, probably part of the photographing spacecraft or its window, adding depth and a sense of nearness. The light is hard and clear, with crisp highlights, deep shadows and fine photographic grain.

How to look at itCómo mirarla

Start with the Earth filling the entire frame, then find the small machine suspended near the bottom. Follow its splayed legs to the thin probes hanging below the footpads. The black corner at lower right quietly reminds you that this view comes from another spacecraft nearby.

ContextContexto

According to NASA/JSC, this is image AS09-21-3183, taken on 7 March 1969 during Apollo 9. It shows the Lunar Module “Spider” in landing configuration, photographed from the Command and Service Modules on the fifth day of an Earth-orbital mission. Its landing gear is deployed. Inside were James A. McDivitt and Russell L. Schweickart, while David R. Scott remained in the Command Module “Gumdrop.” Apollo 9 tested the Lunar Module with a crew in Earth orbit; it did not land on the Moon.

Curious detailDato curioso

Apollo 9 was the first crewed flight of the Lunar Module. Although “Spider” looks ready to land here, its landing was a test in Earth orbit, months before Apollo 11 reached the Moon.

Questions to stay withPreguntas para quedarse

  1. How does the scale of the machine change when you remember that two people are inside it?¿Cómo cambia la escala de la máquina cuando recuerdas que dentro van dos personas?
  2. What does this test in Earth orbit suggest about learning to land somewhere else?¿Qué sugiere esta prueba en órbita terrestre sobre aprender a aterrizar en otro mundo?
  3. If the Earth is the background here, what becomes the “ground” in space?

I linger on the materials glowing under harsh sunlight. On top, the shiny silver and matte black panels reveal every fold and shadow; below, the reddish gold and coppery insulation looks like deliberately crinkled paper, made to protect against extreme cold and heat. That square photographic grain is typical of 1969. The four splayed legs with their circular footpads and thin whisker-like probes are already deployed. What moves me is how fragile that faceted architecture looks against the greyish blue Earth covered in clouds.

This is Spider, the Apollo 9 Lunar Module, photographed on March 7, 1969 from the Gumdrop command module. It was not heading to the Moon yet: it was the crewed test in Earth orbit, with landing gear deployed and McDivitt and Schweickart on board. What you see below are two dark triangular windows and an open oval on top. The diagonal black shape is part of the spacecraft that took the picture. And behind, with no horizon line, the pale blue Earth with fragmented white clouds, huge and close, reminding us we had not yet gone far.

The eight-year-oldLa niña de ocho años

It looks like a robot spider floating above the world. It has a golden shiny belly like crinkled gift wrap and a silver head with two little black triangle eyes. It has four skinny legs with round little plates and even tiny whiskers hanging down. It is alone in the middle of all the blue of Earth with its little white clouds. In the corner there is a huge black shadow, as if someone is peeking at it from a window. It makes me giggle and feel a little nervous because it looks tiny but very brave.
