What you would seeLo que verías
At the lower center floats the Lunar Module Spider, photographed from a window of the Command Module. Its angular, faceted body appears in dark tones of charcoal and black, with golden panels and a lower section wrapped in shiny, wrinkled reddish insulation. Four thin, jointed legs splay diagonally, each ending in a circular footpad from which a slender contact probe dangles like a fine thread. The surface looks metallic, with visible bolts, antennas and crisp shadows carved by harsh, unfiltered sunlight. As backdrop, Earth is covered by a dense, puffy blanket of white and pale grey clouds, with glimpses of blue ocean peeking through. On the right edge, the dark, out-of-focus silhouette of the window frame from which the picture was taken intrudes into the scene, creating a sense of depth and of looking out from inside another spacecraft. Higher up, faintly and more distantly, a second ghostly silhouette of the same module appears, a duplicate caused by framing or reflection. The scale conveys technological fragility and solitude against the vastness of the planet.
How to look at itCómo mirarla
First notice the contrast between the hard, dark geometry of Spider and the soft cotton-like clouds of Earth. Then trace the four legs to the small pads and the delicate sensor threads reaching into emptiness. Finally note the dark window frame on the right: remember a human eye was watching and photographing from another vessel.

Image AS09-21-3197 taken on March 7, 1969, the fifth day of the Apollo 9 Earth-orbital mission, from the Command and Service Modules Gumdrop. It shows the Lunar Module Spider in landing configuration with landing gear deployed and surface contact probes extended. On board were Commander James A. McDivitt and Lunar Module Pilot Russell L. Schweickart, while Command Module Pilot David R. Scott remained in Gumdrop. Operated by NASA from the Johnson Space Center, Apollo 9 was the first crewed flight test of the complete Apollo system in low Earth orbit and was essential to validate the later Moon landing. The specific crew photographer is not firmly recorded.

Curious detailDato curioso
Apollo 9 was the first mission in which a crewed Lunar Module flew freely, separated, flew in formation and redocked with the Command Module in space, a maneuver essential for the later Apollo 11 landing.

What moves me most is the contrast of materials revealed by the harsh sunlight with no atmosphere to soften it. The Araña Lunar Module body is angular, with dark panels between anthracite gray and black and golden details. Below, the bright reddish insulation looks wrinkled, like crumpled foil. The four thin legs end in circular pads and from each one hangs a fine probe like a thread. Everything looks fragile and at the same time incredibly precise.

This is photo AS09-21-3197 from March 7, 1969, the fifth day of Apollo 9 in low Earth orbit. We see Araña already separated from Gumdrop, photographed from the Command Module window. Inside were McDivitt and Schweickart, with the landing gear deployed in landing configuration, while Scott waited in Gumdrop. It was the first crewed test of the complete Apollo system and it validated the moon landing. In the background, the white clouds and blue ocean remind us where we are.

It looks like a little metal spider floating over Earth. It has four skinny legs spread open as if it is about to jump and on each foot there is a round little plate with a tiny string hanging down. Its belly is black and golden and underneath it is covered with something wrinkled and shiny in red. Behind it there are lots of white fluffy clouds like cotton and a bit of blue sea. It looks so alone in space and the dark window makes me feel I am looking from inside the ship too.
