What you would seeLo que verías
In the foreground, eleven people stand in a line inside a spacious, bright hangar. Ten wear intense blue NASA flight suits with mission patches on the chest and shoulders, an American flag on the sleeve, and black boots; most have arms crossed and smile toward the camera. To the left, a man in a dark business suit and light tie completes the group. Behind them, in the midground, sits a white T-38 Talon training jet with a blue stripe and the NASA insignia on the tail, its transparent canopy reflecting the hangar lights. Above the group hangs a large American flag displayed vertically, its thirteen red and white stripes and star-filled blue field suspended from the exposed steel roof trusses. The background shows white hangar walls, industrial doors, overhead beams, ceiling lights, and floor uplights casting a bluish glow across the polished concrete floor. The lighting is bright and even with warm and cool accents, and the composition is symmetrical and ceremonial, human in scale yet framed by the monumentality of the hangar and the aircraft.
How to look at itCómo mirarla
Start with the oversized flag anchoring the center, then lower your gaze to the line of people in the foreground. Notice how the matching blue suits create unity while subtle differences in posture personalize each figure. Look beyond to the T-38 and the hangar architecture, which frame the scene with a sense of training, teamwork, and scale.
ContextContexto
According to source data, the image was taken on December 6, 2021, in Hangar 135 at Ellington Field, Houston, during the NASA 2021 Astronaut Candidate Announcement. The photographer credited is Robert Markowitz of the Johnson Space Center (JSC), and the image is part of the NASA Image and Video Library. The group is posed in front of a T-38 aircraft, long used by NASA for astronaut training. Ellington Field serves as NASA flight operations base. The photograph documents an official public presentation; individual names of those pictured are not listed in the provided data.

T-38 Talon jets have appeared in official astronaut portraits since the Gemini and Apollo era and are still used to train judgment and quick decision-making in flight.

Questions to stay withPreguntas para quedarse
- What does the uniformity of the flight suits suggest when contrasted with the single figure in a business suit?¿Qué comunica la uniformidad de los trajes frente a la única figura de traje civil?
- How does the meaning shift if you read the aircraft and hangar as protagonists rather than just backdrop?¿Cómo cambia la lectura de la imagen si te fijas en la aeronave y el hangar como protagonistas y no solo como fondo?
- What ideas about the future and representation does such a formal group portrait beneath a monumental flag convey?¿Qué idea de futuro y representación sugiere un retrato grupal tan formal bajo una bandera monumental?

The conservatorLa restauradora
I focus on materials and their preservation: the intense blue flight suits with patches and the suspended flag create a strong contrast with the white T-38 and the polished gray hangar floor. I notice the bright artificial light, with reflections on the canopy and a bluish glow on the ground, revealing the texture of fabrics, metal and concrete. Everything is arranged for an official presentation, and the balance between the human scale and the monumental setting shows the institutional care in documenting this moment.

I see eleven people in a ceremonial formation in front of the T-38 Talon, NASA's historic astronaut training aircraft. I recognize Hangar 135 at Ellington Field in Houston, the flight operations base, photographed on December 6, 2021 to introduce the 2021 class. The large United States flag hanging from the beams reinforces the official character. I feel excited thinking about the training ahead of them and how this photo marks the beginning of their path toward space exploration.
The eight-year-oldLa niña de ocho años
It looks like a superhero photo before a mission. There are ten people in matching blue suits, almost all with crossed arms and smiling, and a man in a suit on the side. Behind them there is a shiny white and blue airplane and a giant flag hanging from the hangar ceiling. Everything looks big and bright, as if the hangar were a huge house for airplanes. I wonder if they will soon fly very high and if they will wear shiny helmets.
