What you would seeLo que verías
The frame is filled by an uneven wall of dust and gas stretching diagonally from left to right, like a mountain range at dusk. In the foreground, dense material glows in ochre, copper and golden brown, with fluffy, lumpy and translucent textures where light filters through folds and fine filaments. Peaks and pillars rise from this ridge toward the upper part of the image. The background is a deep sky of cobalt blue and velvety black, speckled with hundreds of pinpoint stars; several of the brightest show crisp six- or eight-point diffraction spikes. Toward the lower area the haze grows darker and mottled, with reddish veins and tiny bright knots hinting at hidden nascent stars. Two especially luminous stars with white and bluish glare dominate the upper right and lower right. The scale is vast yet the sharpness reveals delicate details: wisps that look like steam curling off summits, tiny bubbles and golden jets. The light is cool above and warm below, creating a dramatic contrast between the starry void and the turbulent wall.
How to look at itCómo mirarla
Start with the contrast between the blue starry area and the orange wall, and follow the ridge like a horizon. Then linger on the peaks and pillars that resist erosion and on the tiny golden dots and filaments veiled by haze, where forming stars hide. Finally look for the cross-shaped flares of bright stars to sense the depth of the field.
ContextContexto
Scientific image taken in infrared light by the Near-Infrared Camera (NIRCam) on NASA’s James Webb Space Telescope, released on July 12, 2022 by NASA, ESA, CSA and STScI. What resembles a moonlit mountain range is actually the edge of a huge gaseous cavity in NGC 3324, a young star-forming region in the Carina Nebula, about 7,600 light-years away. According to source data, the cavity was carved by intense ultraviolet radiation and stellar winds from massive hot young stars located just outside the view, above the area shown. NIRCam’s resolution unveils hundreds of previously hidden stars, background galaxies, pillars, bubbles and protostellar outflows. It was among Webb’s first public images.

What looks like a mountain range at sunset is actually a wall of dust and gas captured in infrared by the James Webb telescope's NIRCam camera. I focus on the texture: ochre, copper and golden tones with spongy, translucent surfaces where light filters through folds. As a restorer I think about how light reveals what is hidden; here infrared pierces the dust and shows hundreds of newborn stars, pillars and bubbles that were previously veiled. It is a cleaning job done by the light of massive stars themselves.

This is the Cosmic Cliffs image in NGC 3324, inside the Carina Nebula, about 7,600 light years away, released on July 12, 2022. It is not a mountain but the edge of a cavity carved by ultraviolet radiation and winds from young hot stars located outside the frame, above. With NIRCam we see the deep cobalt blue sky with stars showing cross-shaped diffraction spikes and, below, the dark mottled mist with reddish veins where forming stars hide. I love trying to count how many background galaxies appear.

It looks like a giant mountain in space! The bottom part is like a golden fluffy cloud with peaks rising toward the dark blue sky full of shiny little stars. Some stars have little crosses of light like diamonds with spikes. I like to imagine I am flying over those cliffs and the golden wind is swirls of steam. Down below there are dark parts where baby stars hide and peek out. Everything is huge and looks like it is from a storybook!
