What you would seeLo que verías
Black-and-white photograph of six men standing on an asphalt runway, posing on either side of the nose of an X-15 experimental aircraft. Three pilots stand on the left of the nose and three on the right. All wear shiny, wrinkled silver pressure suits with dark tall boots and rigid neck rings for helmets. Each holds a helmet with a dark visor under an arm or in both hands. Their stances are relaxed yet formal, facing the camera. At center, the X-15 fills the immediate background: a dark, sharply pointed nose, a metallic fuselage with visible rivets, a small cockpit with an oval window, and a front landing gear with two wheels and a NASA insignia on the side. On the vertical tail the word NASA and the number 66671 appear in white. Daylight is bright and sunny, casting short crisp shadows on the pavement, with a smooth pale sky and a faint desert horizon. The suit fabric reflects light strongly, the tarmac shows cracks and a dark painted line, and details of gloves, helmets and boots are clearly rendered.
How to look at itCómo mirarla
Start with the gleaming suits and helmets in hand, then scan across the six faces. Notice the contrast between the dark pointed nose of the X-15 and the bright silver of the suits. Finally look for small aircraft details, like the tail number and the front wheels.
ContextContexto
The image comes from the NASA Image and Video Library, credited to NASA/AFRC and dated December 2, 1965. According to the source caption, it shows X-15 pilots from left to right: U.S. Air Force pilots William J. «Pete» Knight, Robert A. Rushworth and Joseph H. Engle, and NASA pilots Milton O. Thompson, Bill Dana and John B. «Jack» McKay. The North American X-15 was a rocket-powered research aircraft flown in the 1960s to study hypersonic flight and high-altitude conditions, providing essential data for aviation and space programs. The photograph was taken on the ground, probably at the desert test range where the program operated.

Curious detailDato curioso
Several X-15 pilots flew above 50 miles altitude and were recognized as astronauts by the U.S. Air Force, and the program set speed and altitude records that stood for decades.

I focus on the textures revealed in this black and white photograph from December 2, 1965. The six silver pressurized suits shine and wrinkle like foil, with stiff neck rings visible and helmets tucked under arms. The X-15 in the center shows its dark pointed nose, metal fuselage with rivets, small oval cockpit window and tail fin marked NASA and number 66671, all set against cracked asphalt and the hard desert light that throws short sharp shadows on the ground.
The amateur astronomerEl astrónomo aficionado
As a sky watcher I see a flying laboratory here. The North American X-15 behind the six pilots was an experimental rocket plane from the nineteen sixties built to study hypersonic flight and very high altitude. Its data shaped aviation and space programs. On December 2, 1965 those posing are William J. Pete Knight, Robert A. Rushworth and Joseph H. Engle from the U.S. Air Force, with Milton O. Thompson, Bill Dana and Jack McKay from NASA, all in pressurized suits like astronauts standing in the desert.

The eight-year-oldLa niña de ocho años
They look like six shiny astronauts! Everyone wears wrinkly silver suits that reflect the sun and dark tall boots, and each one holds a helmet with a visor like a ball. They stand in a line on the asphalt, three on one side and three on the other side of the plane. The X-15 has a very pointy dark nose, it looks metallic with lots of little rivets and a small oval window where the pilot sits. I like that they look serious but happy!
¡Parecen seis astronautas brillosos!
