What you would seeLo que verías
Black-and-white photograph in landscape format showing a large group of men posing with the North American X-15 rocket plane on a sun-baked concrete ramp. The aircraft dominates the center and background, seen from its right side in three-quarter view with its canopy hinged open upward; partial lettering reading AIR FORCE on the side and U.S. AIR near the cockpit is visible. The composition is layered in three tiers forming an informal pyramid: about twenty-two individuals, some kneeling on the cracked pavement in the foreground, others standing in a middle row, and several seated or perched along the fuselage spine and wing root, with one man inside the cockpit and another on the access ladder. In the front row, six men kneel, wearing light short-sleeved plaid or plain shirts, work trousers, caps and sunglasses; one has a white helmet resting on the ground at his knees. The middle row shows eleven men standing, arms crossed or hands on hips, smiling toward the camera. Above, five more men lounge on top of the dark fuselage. Harsh desert sunlight creates short, dense shadows and high contrast, emphasizing the smooth metal skin of the aircraft, the woven texture of shirts, and the rough, stained concrete. The background is an empty flat horizon and a cloudless bright sky. Small details include a light canvas bag held at the side, a coiled hose on the left edge of the frame, and a small wheeled dolly under the wing.
How to look at itCómo mirarla
Start with the dark, glossy silhouette of the X-15 that anchors the whole scene, then move down to the faces of the kneeling men in the foreground. Notice how the open canopy and the men sitting casually on the fuselage break the formality of a group portrait and convey pride and familiarity with the machine.
ContextContexto
The image comes from the NASA Image and Video Library, credited to NASA/AFRC, dated July 16, 1962, and catalogued as a scientific photograph in the Space and science category. According to the source caption, it shows X-15 program personnel: Edward Ed Nice in the cockpit, Thomas Tom McAlister on the ladder, plus a back row and a kneeling row of technicians and support staff whose names are listed, with one unidentified person among those kneeling. The X-15 was a U.S. experimental rocket plane of the 1960s that flew high-altitude and high-speed research missions. The photograph was taken at what is now Armstrong Flight Research Center in California. No further details about the specific mission that day are provided.

Curious detailDato curioso
The X-15 seen behind the group remains the fastest crewed airplane ever flown, reaching Mach 6.7 in 1967, a record that has not been surpassed by another piloted airplane.

I focus on the texture of this black and white photograph, because it speaks of time and care. The high contrast reveals every crack in the concrete, every wrinkle in the light colored shirts and the metallic shine of the long dark fuselage of the X-15. I see the AIR FORCE lettering and the U.S. AIR above the open cockpit. I am interested in how the harsh desert light of California on July 16, 1962 casts short shadows and how the NASA archive preserves this collective work portrait.

For me this image is pure exploration history. It is not just any portrait, it is the team of the North American X-15 rocket plane, the experimental aircraft that in the sixties flew to the edge of space. Here it sits on the runway of what is now the Armstrong Flight Research Center. I can spot Edward Ed Nice in the cockpit and Thomas Tom McAlister on the ladder, surrounded by technicians kneeling, standing and sitting on the back of the aircraft. A pyramid-shaped team that made it possible to fly very high very fast.

It looks like they are playing at making a human pyramid on top of a giant airplane! Some are kneeling down below wearing caps and dark glasses, others are standing with arms crossed and smiling, and the bravest ones are sitting right on top of the plane's back, one even inside the cockpit that is open like a little lid. The airplane is super long and dark, it is in a desert with no clouds and the sun is very bright. I love how everyone squeezed together for the photo without falling off.
