What you would seeLo que verías
This is a black-and-white cutaway technical illustration of the North American X-15 rocket plane, shown in an oblique three-quarter view from above and slightly behind, floating against a soft gradient background that fades from light gray to near white. The rendering uses realistic shading to suggest polished metal, riveted panels, and internal ductwork. The fuselage is sliced open lengthwise to expose its internal layout. At the rear the XLR-99 engine nozzle is clearly visible, linked to a massive cylindrical anhydrous ammonia tank labeled as fuel and, forward of it, a liquid oxygen tank labeled as oxidizer. Moving forward are smaller spherical helium tanks, hydrogen peroxide tanks, auxiliary power units, and a liquid nitrogen vessel. The cockpit near the nose reveals the ejection seat and a slender, needle-like nose cone. Stubby wings and the vertical tail fin each carry small attitude control rockets, also labeled. Fine leader lines in English identify each system, and the vertical stabilizer bears the NASA insignia. The image has the flat depth and crisp edges of a scientific diagram, with no cast shadows, emphasizing engineering clarity over atmospheric effect.
How to look at itCómo mirarla
Start with the full dart-like outline from nose to tail to grasp its proportions. Then follow the labels from rear to front as if tracing fuel flow through the machine. Pause on the tiny cockpit and notice how small the pilot space is compared to the huge propellant tanks that dominate the body.

Curious detailDato curioso
The X-15 still holds the official airspeed record for a crewed winged aircraft, reaching Mach 6.7 in 1967, and several flights exceeded 50 miles in altitude, earning its pilots astronaut wings.
Questions to stay withPreguntas para quedarse
- What does the interior, dominated by tanks and engine, tell you about the priorities and risks of this design?¿Qué te comunica sobre el riesgo y la prioridad del diseño que casi todo el interior sean tanques y motor?
- How does seeing the X-15 as an explanatory diagram rather than a photograph in flight change your understanding of it?¿Cómo cambia tu percepción del X-15 al verlo como un dibujo explicativo y no como una foto en vuelo?
- What visual cues make this image feel objective and technical even though it also serves as scientific promotion?¿Qué detalles visuales hacen que esta imagen parezca objetiva y técnica aunque también sea una forma de propaganda científica?

The conservatorLa restauradora
I read this X-15 cutaway as an exercise in material honesty. It is a black-and-white illustration on a light gray background, with shading that simulates polished metal and riveted panels. I am drawn to how the drawing opens the fuselage to reveal the XLR-99 engine, the anhydrous ammonia tank and the liquid oxygen tank, plus the small helium and hydrogen peroxide tanks. The English labels guide the reading without romanticism. As a conservator I value the crisp linework and preserved contrast, which keeps the didactic intent from 1962 legible.

For me this drawing is a map for a leap to the edge of space. The X-15, seen in an oblique isometric view from above, looks ready to light its rear nozzle and leave the pale gray background behind. I love spotting the liquid oxygen tank, the ammonia tank, the liquid nitrogen vessel and the attitude control rockets on the wings and tail. It is a 1960s NASA rocket plane that explored hypersonic flight. Every label reminds me that flying high meant mastering propulsion, control and survival.
The eight-year-oldLa niña de ocho años
It looks like a giant toy plane with its roof removed so you can see everything inside. I see it floating over a light gray background and it shines like aluminum. At the front is the cockpit with its ejectable seat and a super pointy nose. At the back it has a huge nozzle and big tanks, one says fuel and another says oxidizer. On the stubby wings and tail there are little buttons that are tiny rockets to steer in space. I like hunting for the little labels that point to each part like hidden treasure.
