What you would seeLo que verías

In the foreground, ten older adults stand in a nearly straight row on a light-gray concrete parking lot marked with worn yellow and white lines, facing the camera under intense sun. They wear plain, everyday clothes: gray jackets, blue, white, or pink long-sleeved shirts, trousers in beige, olive green, and navy, closed shoes, and a few pairs of sunglasses. At the left, a man in a gray jacket stands with his hands at his sides; beside him, a woman with short, light hair wears a pale outfit and holds something small in one hand. Across the center and right are mostly bald or gray-haired men, one leaning on a cane, another with a small camera dangling from his wrist, most in relaxed postures with faint smiles. Behind them, rising diagonally from left to right on a dark pedestal, is the black replica of a rocket plane, its pointed nose aimed at the sky, yellow markings on its tail and the letters USAF visible along its fuselage. The group's shadows fall short and sharp on the pavement. In the background are reddish shrubs, a palm tree, low buildings, and, far off to the right, the white tail of another aircraft. The cloudless sky is a deep, even blue, and the hard midday light brings out wrinkles, fabrics, and the metallic sheen of the aircraft.

How to look at itCómo mirarla

First look at the row of people and then at the aircraft rising behind them: the contrast between fragile, aging bodies and the still-aggressive machine sets the tone. Next, notice the small details — a cane, sunglasses, a small camera on a wrist — that turn a formal group portrait into a reunion of colleagues. The almost empty blue sky leaves nowhere else to look.

ContextContexto

According to its NASA Image and Video Library source, this photograph by NASA/Tony Landis, dated October 24, 2008, brought together veterans of the X-15 flight research program, most of them by then retired, at Dryden. They are posed in front of the replica of X-15 No. 3; from left to right they are Johnny Armstrong, Betty Love, Paul Reukauf, Bob Hoey, Dave Stoddard, Dean Webb, Vince Capasso, Bill Dana — who flew the final flight — John McTigue, and T. D. Barnes. The occasion was a historical colloquium marking the 40th anniversary of the last flight, on October 24, 1968, featuring aerospace historian Dennis Jenkins, author of *X-15: Extending the Frontiers of Flight*. The source does not specify each person's role in the program.

  1. What does it mean for the people who built and flew a machine to grow old beside it?¿Qué significa envejecer junto a la máquina que ayudaste a construir o volar?
  2. How does a replica — not the original aircraft — work as a place of memory?¿Cómo funciona una réplica —y no el avión original— como lugar de memoria?
  3. Whose work in a program like this tends to be remembered, and whose tends to be forgotten?¿El trabajo de quiénes se recuerda en un programa así, y el de quiénes suele olvidarse?

The conservatorLa restauradora

As a restorer I notice how the midday light reveals every texture, from the pale concrete with worn yellow and white lines to the metallic shine of the black X-15 replica behind the group. The short shadows anchor the ten people to the ground and highlight wrinkles, fabrics and shoes. It moves me to see them standing, in sober clothing and relaxed postures, preserving the memory of a program that brushed space and that today we care for as fragile, human heritage.

The amateur astronomerEl astrónomo aficionado

With my love for the sky, this image makes me look up even though the group is in the foreground. Behind them the dark replica of X-15 number 3 points its nose toward the intense cloudless blue, with yellow marks on the tail and the letters USAF on the fuselage. I know from the caption that they are veterans gathered at Dryden in 2008 to remember the final flight of 1968. It thrills me to think that these ten elders helped open the path to space that we still explore today.

The eight-year-oldLa niña de ocho años

I love to count and look at colors! In the photo there are ten grandparents in a line on a gray floor with yellow and white stripes. They all wear soft colors like beige, blue and gray, and some wear dark glasses. Behind them there is a very pointy black plane that looks like a rocket pointing at the bright blue sky. You can see palm trees and little red bushes behind. It looks like they are posing happily together for a keepsake photo under the sun.

¡Me gusta contar y mirar colores!
