What you would seeLo que verías

The photograph shows an indoor press or presentation room, viewed slightly from above and from behind the audience. In the foreground, out of focus, are the backs of heads and shoulders of several seated people, in patterned upholstered chairs with dark wooden frames. They face a row of seven people at the front: five standing against a black curtain on the left, and two seated on the right, in dark suits, engaged in conversation. Standing among them is a blonde woman in black with a small plaque or folder in her hands. On the far left wall hangs a flat screen showing the telescope in a clean room, and a small space poster. The entire right side is occupied by tall windows protected by a wooden railing. Behind the glass, immense golden hexagons with black edges fill the view: it is the telescope's primary mirror, cut off by the window frames and larger than the room itself can contain. Above, a dark banner reads “James Webb Space Telescope” beside an image of stars. The light is that of a fluorescent office ceiling, flat and white, contrasting with the warm, almost honeyed sheen of the mirror. Small details emerge slowly: ties, brown shoes, a red circular sticker on the glass, earpieces, and hands clasped over knees.

How to look at itCómo mirarla

First look at the golden glow behind the glass, then notice how calmly the people in front of it are sitting. Compare the screen at the left, where the telescope looks small and distant, with the real mirror, which is too large to fit fully in a single window. That shift in scale changes the scene from a routine press event into the unveiling of an instrument.

ContextContexto

According to the source, this photograph by NASA/GSFC/Bill Hrybyk, dated November 2, 2016, documents the James Webb Space Telescope Mirror Reveal and comes from the NASA Image and Video Library. GSFC is NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center. Behind the window is the telescope's primary mirror, recognizable by its large gold hexagonal segments. Webb was developed as a space observatory for infrared astronomy and was launched years after this unveiling, in 2021. The individual identities of the people shown are not given in the source, so they are not named here.

Curious detailDato curioso

Webb's primary mirror is 6.5 meters across and is made of 18 hexagonal segments; because it was too large to launch fully open, it was designed to fold and unfold in space.

Questions to stay withPreguntas para quedarse

  1. What does it do to our perception of a space telescope to see it first behind glass, in an ordinary conference room?¿Qué le hace a nuestra percepción de un telescopio espacial verlo primero tras un cristal, en una sala de conferencias común?
  2. How does the calm formality of the people contrast with the scale and ambition of the golden mirror behind them?¿Cómo contrasta la formalidad tranquila de las personas con la escala y la ambición del espejo dorado que tienen detrás?
  3. What is the difference between seeing the telescope on a screen and seeing the real object, even when the real one is only partially visible?¿Qué diferencia hay entre ver el telescopio en una pantalla y ver el objeto real, aunque del real solo se alcance a ver una parte?

The conservatorLa restauradora

If you look closely, two kinds of light coexist here that I would not leave together for long. The flat white light from the ceiling fluorescents falls on suits, curtains and chairs, while the warm golden glow of the mirror comes through the large windows like liquid honey. That contrast makes me think about conservation, about how such a sensitive object needs a clean room behind the glass. Notice the window frames cutting across the hexagons and the small red sticker on the pane: they are subtle barriers between the audience and something that still cannot be touched.

The amateur astronomerEl astrónomo aficionado

What you see in the background is not decoration, it is the largest eye we have ever sent to space to look in infrared light. Each golden hexagon is a segment of the James Webb primary mirror, and here, in November 2016, it was still on Earth, at the Goddard Space Flight Center, being presented to the public before its 2021 launch. I love spotting the screen showing the telescope in the clean room and the sign that says James Webb Space Telescope above the windows. It is the exact moment before the adventure began.

The eight-year-oldLa niña de ocho años

It looks like the room has a wall made of giant golden cookies! They are shiny hexagons with black edges and they do not even fit through the window because they are so huge. I would be up front with the blonde lady holding a little folder, just staring with my mouth open. In the back is the audience, you only see blurry heads and shoulders. I like hunting for tiny details: the ties on the men, the brown shoes, the hands resting on knees and the little red sticker on the glass like a stamp.

In the room in the background, how many people make up the row facing the audience at the front, counting those standing by the curtain and those seated on the right?

    HintPista

Calmly count the five figures standing on the left and add the two suited people seated on the right.

  2. #2

If you look for the warm glow coming through the large windows, what color are the huge hexagons of the mirror seen behind the glass?

    HintPista

Think of honey or gold under white light, the tone that contrasts with the black curtain and the dark chairs.

  3. #3

On the window glass, near the wooden railing, there is a small colorful circular detail, what color is that sticker?

    HintPista

Look at the glass that separates the audience from the mirror, it is a small circle that stands out against the golden reflection.
