What you would seeLo que verías

The image shows two nearly identical views of Uranus placed side by side against a deep black background, like a diptych designed for comparison over time. At the center of each panel the planet appears as a perfect sphere in pale, milky blue, shading to a slightly deeper blue toward the limb. Around the globe are extremely faint rings, thin whitish ellipses tilted diagonally that almost dissolve into darkness; their line is delicate and slightly grainy, like chalk on blackboard. On the right side of the planetary disk the main feature stands out: bright, irregular white patches with a soft diffuse halo, resembling glowing clouds or flecks of phosphorescent paint. In the left panel they are more extended and elongated, almost like two connected patches; in the right panel they appear more compact and separated into two distinct spots. The planet's surface looks smooth and velvety, with no visible storms, which makes the luminous auroral emissions even more striking. The overall scale conveys cosmic solitude, and the symmetrical composition draws attention to the subtle variation of the aurora from one view to the next.

How to look at itCómo mirarla

First take in the uniform blue of the planet, then look for the ghostly rings encircling it. Focus on the white spots on the right side and compare their shape between the left and right panels; that small change reveals the rotation and dynamics of the aurora.

ContextContexto

This is a composite image combining data from Voyager 2 with two Hubble Space Telescope observations, according to the NASA Image and Video Library source. One Hubble observation provided the ring system and another, taken in ultraviolet light with the STIS instrument, captured the auroras. Auroras occur when charged particles are trapped by a magnetic field and excite gases in the upper atmosphere. On Uranus they were first imaged from Earth by Hubble in 2011, and in 2012 and 2014 a team led from Paris Observatory tracked interplanetary shocks from solar wind to record the most intense auroras ever seen on the planet, gathering the first direct evidence that the shimmering regions rotate with the planet.

Curious detailDato curioso

Uranus is tilted on its side with an axial tilt of about 98 degrees and has a magnetic field that is offset and inclined from its rotation axis, so its auroras do not appear near the geographic poles as they do on Earth.

I love how this image is a scientific collage made with great care. I see two identical Uranus views on a black background, like a diptych for comparison. The planet is a pale blue sphere, smooth and velvety, with rings so faint they look drawn in white chalk. What captivates me most are those bright aurora patches, irregular and phosphorescent, with a diffuse halo. In one panel they look elongated and in the other more separated, and that subtle change is the magic we protect when preserving the image.

What excites me is that this is not a single photo but a composite image with history. According to the record, it combines Voyager 2 data with two Hubble observations, one for the rings and another with the STIS instrument in ultraviolet light for the auroras. Those white patches are real auroras, created by solar wind particles trapped in the magnetic field. Hubble photographed them from Earth for the first time in 2011, and in 2012 and 2014 the team captured the most intense ones yet, showing they rotate with the planet.

It looks like they copied and pasted Uranus twice! There are two light blue balls floating in the blackness, like giant marbles. It has super thin rings, like bubble hoops you can barely see. The prettiest part is the little white spots that glow, like paint that shines in the dark. On one side they look big and close together and on the other smaller and apart. I like spotting the differences between the two planets like it is a game.
