What you would seeLo que verías
At the center of a deep star field float two irregular pink clouds that together look like a single luminous heart or a figure eight. The upper nebula is larger and more rounded, with soft, diffuse edges and dark filaments cutting across it; the lower nebula is more compact and bright, with a whitish core where young stars cluster. Both glow in shades of pink, magenta and pale salmon, with lighter streaks and patches of dark dust that give a spongy, translucent texture, like watercolor on black velvet. Around them, thousands of pinpoint stars fill the background against a deep black: white, bluish, yellowish and reddish lights, some with tiny diffraction spikes. Stellar density is higher toward the upper edges, with bluish clusters. There is no foreground object in the visual sense; everything is deep space. The light is crisp and cool, typical of a telescopic image, with high contrast between the warm glow of hydrogen and the cool twinkle of stars. Small details, such as a thin dark silhouette on the right edge of the larger cloud, reward slow looking.
How to look at itCómo mirarla
Let the intense pink of the two clouds hold your attention, then trace their uneven borders where gas fades into darkness. Notice the contrast between the soft haze and the sharp tapestry of surrounding stars. Look for the dark filaments slicing the glow, as they reveal dust not yet illuminated.
ContextContexto
The image was captured by NASA's Hubble Space Telescope and released on December 8, 2017 by GSFC. It shows the nebulae jointly catalogued as NGC 248, located in the Small Magellanic Cloud, a dwarf satellite galaxy of the Milky Way about 200,000 light-years away in the constellation Tucana. According to the source, they were discovered in 1834 by astronomer Sir John Herschel and measure about 60 light-years long by 20 wide. Their reddish glow is due to hydrogen heated by intense radiation from bright central stars. The picture is part of the SMIDGE survey, which studies dust and gas in that galaxy to understand how dust forms with few heavy elements.

Curious detailDato curioso
The Small Magellanic Cloud holds between one-fifth and one-tenth of the heavy elements found in the Milky Way, which is why astronomers use it as a nearby laboratory to study what dust was like in the early universe, as noted by the SMIDGE investigation.

If you look closely the way I examine a painting, you will see these two pink clouds are not smooth at all. The upper one is larger and spongy, crossed by dark filaments that look like cracks in watercolor; the lower one is more compact with a very bright whitish core. I love how the dark dust creates transparency over the deep black and how the salmon pink fades into pale streaks. Take your time to spot that thin dark silhouette on the right edge.

What you are seeing is NGC 248 captured by Hubble and released in December 2017. It lies in the Small Magellanic Cloud, about 200 thousand light years away in Tucana, and spans about 60 by 20 light years. That pink glow is hydrogen heated by very powerful young stars at the center. It is part of the SMIDGE survey studying dust with few heavy elements. And yes, first spotted by John Herschel in 1834, it still amazes us today.

It looks like a giant heart in space! It is two pink clouds that together make a sparkly fluffy figure eight. The top one is bigger with little dark lines, the bottom one shines super bright in the middle like it has tiny diamonds. Everything is full of little stars in white, blue and yellow on a black velvet background. If you stare a while it looks like a magic watercolor floating. Can you see the heart too?
