What you would seeLo que verías

Seen head-on and slightly from above through an observation window, the James Webb Space Telescope’s primary mirror fills the left and center of the frame: eighteen golden hexagons arranged like a honeycomb, their warm, matte-metallic surface divided by thin dark seams. Three slender black struts extend forward to hold the secondary mirror assembly at the center, a dark cylindrical form. The intense honey-gold contrasts with the cool, diffuse whites and pale grays of the vast cleanroom behind it. On the upper right wall, the deep blue NASA insignia and the cursive Goddard Space Flight Center logo are clearly visible. The floor below is light and slightly reflective, scattered with yellow scaffolding, rolling platforms, ladders and cables. Two figures in full white cleanroom suits provide scale: one standing on a yellow lift to the right with back turned, another tiny figure near the base of the mirror. Overhead industrial lighting, metal railings on a mezzanine to the left, and faint reflections on the viewing glass complete the layered, documentary atmosphere.

How to look at itCómo mirarla

Start with the golden honeycomb and follow the dark lines between segments toward the black tripod at the center. Then shift to the small white-suited figures to grasp the immense scale. Finally notice the soft reflections on the glass, a reminder that you are looking in from outside the sterile room.

ContextContexto

This photograph shows the James Webb Space Telescope viewed face-on from the observation window of the cleanroom at NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center. Credited to NASA/Goddard/Rebecca Roth and dated December 8, 2017, it comes from the NASA Image and Video Library. The description notes it as a rare frontal view taken during ground integration and testing. No further details about the specific test are given in the source data. The telescope, with its 6.5-meter segmented gold-coated primary mirror, was still years away from its eventual launch in December 2021.

Curious detailDato curioso

Webb’s primary mirror is made of 18 hexagonal beryllium segments coated with a microscopically thin layer of gold, about 100 nanometers thick, optimized to reflect infrared light from the early universe.

I pause on that golden tone that dominates everything. It is not paint, it is eighteen hexagons coated in gold forming a perfect honeycomb, separated by fine dark lines that look drawn with a ruler. I also see the three black arms holding the secondary mirror at the center. Everything shines under a cold and diffuse light that reflects on the floor and on the viewing window we are looking through. In the background, the white of the clean room and the blue of the NASA logo remind us that this shine must be protected from even the smallest speck of dust.

Seeing that honeycomb of eighteen golden hexagons from the front is so exciting. It is the primary mirror of the James Webb, 6.5 meters across, photographed here on December 8, 2017 at the Goddard Center, still in testing before its 2021 launch. Each golden segment will capture light invisible to us. At the center, the secondary mirror with its three black supports. And below, two people in white suits who look tiny next to yellow scaffolds, which reveals its monumental scale. We see it through a window, like privileged visitors.

The eight-year-oldLa niña de ocho años

It looks like a giant honeycomb made of gold! I count eighteen shiny hexagons stuck together, like golden cookies forming a huge flower. In the middle it has a little black triangle with three little legs holding it, like a tiny spider. Everything is behind a glass window and the room is white and super clean, like a hospital for telescopes. There are two people dressed in white who look super tiny, like little ants next to the hive. And at the top it says NASA in blue. It shines a lot!

¡Brilla mucho!
