What you would seeLo que verías
At the exact center floats a perfect matte-black circle, smooth and textureless, like a cutout of absolute void. It represents the event horizon, encircled by a turbulent ring of stretched light arranged in thin, concentric, swirling filaments in white, pale blue and warm amber that suggest stars distorted by gravity. The rest of the field is carpeted with thousands of luminous points against a velvety, near-black background: distant stars and galaxies in warm and cool hues — intense red, electric blue, gold, white — some showing the cross-shaped diffraction spikes typical of telescope optics. The composition is radial and symmetrical, with the void as an eye that pulls the gaze inward. Toward the edges the points are smaller and scattered; close to the ring they elongate and bend into arcs that emphasize gravitational lensing. There is no human scale or horizon, only deep space. The light is high-contrast, pinpoint and sparkling, with a grainy texture of star dust that conveys immensity and vertigo. Small blue and red clumps speckle the field like cosmic confetti, while the dark center remains utterly still.
How to look at itCómo mirarla
Start with the central black circle, then follow the swirling filaments outward. Notice how sharp star points near the rim become curved streaks, that distortion is the key to reading the image.

This is a computer-simulated image released by NASA Goddard Space Flight Center, credited to NASA, ESA, and D. Coe, J. Anderson, and R. van der Marel (STScI). It illustrates the discovery, announced in 2016 and featured in this release dated December 8, 2017, of a supermassive black hole weighing about 17 billion solar masses found at the center of a galaxy in a sparsely populated region of the universe, observed with NASA Hubble Space Telescope and the Gemini Telescope in Hawaii. Until then the largest such objects — around 10 billion solar masses or more, with a record near 21 billion in the crowded Coma Cluster — had been found in very large galaxies within dense, galaxy-rich areas. Not all details of its formation are known; its presence in an isolated environment suggests such behemoths may be more common than previously thought.

Curious detailDato curioso
The stretched light around the center visualizes gravitational lensing: the black hole powerful gravity bends space itself like a funhouse mirror, stretching and smearing light from background stars as they pass by.

What you see is not a direct photo, it is a digital simulation made to explain something invisible. At the center there is a perfect black circle, with no texture or reflection, like a clean cut in paper. It is surrounded by a ring with filaments in white, pale blue and orange that suggest stretched light. I am fascinated by the contrast they achieved: the almost black velvety background is full of grainy dots, and the brightest stars have those little cross-shaped spikes. Everything is composed so your eye falls into the emptiness at the center.

This image makes me think about how huge this is. That black circle at the center represents the event horizon of a supermassive black hole of about 17 billion solar masses, found in a sparsely populated area of the universe. We used to think these giants of more than 10 billion solar masses only lived in dense regions like the Coma cluster. The ring around it shows gravitational lensing, light being bent, and around it thousands of galaxies in red, gold and blue. It hints that many more might be hidden where we were not looking.

It looks like a giant eye in space that wants to suck everything in. In the middle there is a super black circle, like someone made a little hole with scissors and you cannot see anything inside. Around it there is a bright ring that spins like when you swirl white paint with orange and blue. Everything else is little sparkles in many colors, red, gold and blue, like confetti thrown on a black blanket. The ones close to the circle look stretched, as if they are being pulled. It feels a little dizzying but it is beautiful.
