What you would seeLo que verías
The image shows in black and white the curved limb of Mercury sharply cut against the absolute black of space, viewed from a high oblique orbit. In the foreground and toward the right, the surface is intensely lit by low-angle sunlight, revealing a rugged, porous texture covered by countless impact craters of varying sizes, from small pits to broader basins with raised rims and deep shadows. The sunlit rims glow in near-pure white, while their interiors remain in darkness, creating stark contrast. Toward the left and center, the light gradually fades into a twilight zone and then into total darkness, where relief is hinted only by faint glints on ridges and high rims. The horizon is irregular, broken by elevations and depressions, and curves gently across the frame. There is no atmosphere or intermediate sky, only a crisp division between rock and void. The composition is split between brilliant day and engulfing night, evoking isolation and immense planetary scale.
How to look at itCómo mirarla
First follow the curved horizon where sunlit rock meets the blackness of space. Then look at how low sunlight sculpts each crater and casts long shadows that reveal the terrain. Finally notice the slow fade from bright terrain into complete night, marking the boundary between day and endless darkness.

The image titled On the Edge of Mercury was released on December 8, 2017 by NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center and comes from the NASA Image and Video Library, credited to NASA / Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Laboratory / Carnegie Institution of Washington. According to the source, it was acquired by the MESSENGER spacecraft as part of its limb imaging campaign, which captured the planet’s edge weekly with emphasis on the southern hemisphere to complement topography measurements by the Mercury Laser Altimeter. MESSENGER was the first spacecraft to orbit Mercury and operated for more than three years, returning over 250,000 images before its mission ended in 2015.

Curious detailDato curioso
The MESSENGER spacecraft that captured this view is one of only three missions, along with Mariner 10 and BepiColombo, to have visited Mercury, the closest planet to the Sun and one of the hardest to reach due to intense heat and gravity.

What draws me in is the extreme contrast between the pure white of the illuminated rims and the absolute black of space. In this black and white photograph you see the rugged, porous surface of Mercury, covered with craters and deep shadows. As a restorer I think about preserving these tones: from medium gray #8a8a8a to pure white #ffffff, without losing detail in the penumbra zone where light gradually fades into total darkness.

From a high, oblique orbit we see the curved limb of Mercury sharply cut against the void, with no atmosphere to soften the horizon. Grazing sunlight reveals impact craters of all sizes, with raised rims shining bright and floors in shadow. I love knowing this image comes from MESSENGER, the first spacecraft to orbit Mercury, which captured over 250,000 images during more than three years of orbital operations.

It looks like a giant moon split in half, half lit and half dark. On the right side everything shines, full of little holes as if someone threw lots of pebbles at it. On the left side everything turns darker and darker until it disappears. I like that there is no sky, just rock and then nothing, like the edge of a world. Can you imagine standing right on that line between day and night?
