What you would seeLo que verías

The image presents a close cropped view of the solar surface, its curved limb forming a glowing horizon across the lower half of the frame against the blackness of space. At the very center a brilliant white burst flares with a soft star-like cross, radiating outward into looping ribbons of molten gold, amber and burnt orange. The surrounding atmosphere appears as a mottled, cloud-like tapestry in dark brown, charcoal and luminous gold, with grainy and thread-like textures that suggest boiling plasma and tangled magnetic fields. Two additional active regions glow to the left and right of the main flare, each with delicate, hair-fine loops of light. Below, the Sun’s edge is rimmed by a hazy, diffuse aureole of pale gold that fades into darkness, giving a sense of depth and scale. The light is dramatic and high contrast, with bright highlights and deep shadows that emphasize the three-dimensional arches and swirling veils of material lifted above the surface.

How to look at itCómo mirarla

Start at the intense white core and follow the fiery orange veil curling downward from it. Then shift to the smaller bright knots on either side to see the magnetic loops, and finally notice the soft golden glow along the solar limb that frames the explosion.

ContextContexto

This view was captured by NASA’s Solar Dynamics Observatory (SDO), as stated in the source record, showing a mid-level M8.7 solar flare occurring shortly before midnight EST on Dec. 16, 2014, titled as Dec. 17 in universal time. The image credit is NASA / Goddard / SDO and the medium is listed as photography / scientific imagery, typically taken in extreme ultraviolet and colorized for analysis. SDO is operated by NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center as part of its heliophysics research to understand solar activity and its effects. The source does not provide further details about the specific active region.

Curious detailDato curioso

SDO captures images of the Sun in multiple extreme ultraviolet wavelengths every 12 seconds, allowing scientists to track solar flares in near real time.

The conservatorLa restauradora

As a restorer I am fascinated by how this scientific image from NASA's SDO turns extreme ultraviolet data into such an intense golden scene. I notice the blinding white point at the center, the orange filaments forming arcs and swirls, and the grainy texture of the chromosphere in burnt amber and old gold tones. I wonder how color and brightness are digitally preserved so the contrast between the luminous plasma and the black of space keeps moving us without losing scientific accuracy.

The amateur astronomerEl astrónomo aficionado

For me this photo from the Solar Dynamics Observatory is pure heliophysics in action and it reminds me why I watch the Sun with such respect. Here we see the M8.7 class flare from December 16 2014, that white star-shaped burst with four points and plasma arcs that rise and curve. On the sides I spot two smaller active regions with bright magnetic loops and below the solar limb cut against dark space with its soft golden halo.

The eight-year-oldLa niña de ocho años

It looks like the Sun is doing magic! I see a giant ball of golden fire with a super bright horizon and in the middle a tiny white star explodes throwing orange sparks everywhere. Everything looks like bubbling magma or warm honey with dark clouds moving around. On the sides there are two other little lights with shiny threads and at the bottom the Sun ends and black space begins. It makes me want to draw it.

If you look carefully, how many small bright active regions flank the central flare, one on each side?

    HintPista

Look to the left and right of the white star-shaped point, you will see more subtle luminous loops.

  2. #2

What color is the dazzling point bursting at the center of the image, shaped like a four-pointed star?

    HintPista

It is the lightest color in the palette and contrasts with the surrounding golds and ambers.

  3. #3

What dark and deep object serves as the background to the golden lower edge of the Sun?

    HintPista

It is what lies beyond the Sun, where there is no light and everything looks black.
