What you would seeLo que verías
The square image is dominated by the full disk of the Sun, centered and filling almost the entire frame against a uniform black background of space. No stars or other objects are visible: the solar sphere seems to float in darkness. Its surface is not smooth; it looks grainy, turbulent, and mottled, with dark patches woven through golden filaments, like molten metal or stirred embers. Intense yellow, gold, and burnt orange dominate, with nearly white highlights where the light concentrates, and ochre and brown shadows that give the surface relief. Around the rim, a faint corona escapes in flames, plumes, and luminous arcs. These are clearest on the left side, where fans of light open outward, and along the top and bottom, where the edge softens into a halo. At several points on the surface, bright loops rise like horseshoes or incandescent fountains. The commanding detail, slightly below center, is an intensely white-gold flash from which a reddish flare pours downward in an arc. Small bright points cluster around it like sparks. Looked at slowly, asymmetries emerge: the lower hemisphere holds far more luminous activity than the darker, relatively quiet areas near the edges.
How to look at itCómo mirarla
Start with the blinding flash just below the center: that is the flare named in the title. Then move outward to the smaller glowing loops across the surface, and finally to the quieter, darker patches, which make the active regions stand out. Notice how the left edge throws light into space; the Sun does not end at its sharp-looking rim.
ContextContexto
According to the source, NASA's Solar Dynamics Observatory (SDO) captured this mid-level solar flare, classified in the title as M8.7, on December 17, 2014; the description specifies that the image was taken on December 16, shortly before midnight Eastern Time in the United States, a difference probably explained by time zones. The bright flash near the middle is the flare itself. Credit goes to NASA/Goddard/SDO, via the NASA Image and Video Library. Solar flares are intense bursts of radiation in the Sun's atmosphere. Based on these data alone, any specific effects this particular flare may have had are not known.
Certainty of this context: high. Written by an AI model (muse-wonder-1.0) looking at the image and the source record; when in doubt, trust the source.Certeza de este contexto: alta. Curious detailDato curioso
Solar flares are classified A, B, C, M, and X, from weakest to strongest, with each letter representing a tenfold increase in energy output. An M8.7 flare therefore sits close to the threshold of the most powerful category, X.

The conservatorLa restauradora
As a restorer I am fascinated by the texture revealed in this SDO image. I see a solar disk centered on a black background, with no stars, its surface granular like molten metal in shades of gold, burnt orange and intense white, with ochre shadows that create depth. The edge releases plumes and arches of the corona, more visible on the left side. The central point, slightly below center, is a white and golden flare with a reddish loop falling in an arc. I wonder how to preserve that light without losing detail.
The amateur astronomerEl astrónomo aficionado
As an amateur astronomer I am thrilled to know that NASA's Solar Dynamics Observatory captured this on December 16 shortly before midnight Eastern time, although the title dates it December 17 due to time zones. It is a mid-level M8.7 flare, seen here as a whitish flash slightly below the center, with a reddish arched flare and sparkles around it. I love hunting for the bright horseshoe-shaped loops and noticing how the lower hemisphere is much more active than the dark, quiet edges.
The eight-year-oldLa niña de ocho años
It looks like a giant cookie made of melted cheese floating in the dark! The Sun fills almost the whole picture and looks all bumpy, with golden and orange dots shining like embers. There are no little stars around, just the black background. The coolest part is the big whitish explosion a little below the center, with a red tail bending like a slide and lots of tiny sparkles. On the left side little plumes of light stick out. I want to touch it but it would surely burn a lot.
