What you would seeLo que verías

At the center of a pitch-black void, the full disk of the Sun dominates the frame, its surface rendered as a churning, granular tapestry of deep crimson, burnt orange, and molten yellow. Dark thread-like filaments, bright knotted active regions, and swirling plasma create an impression of roiling lava or glowing embers seen from above. A soft, golden halo encircles the limb, the sun's corona, with feathery plumes and delicate loops extending outward into darkness like translucent flames. On the right edge, near the equator, an intensely white and brilliant flash marks the flare itself, surrounded by a diffuse glow that bleeds into the corona. Directly beneath it, a prominent, arch-shaped prominence of reddish-orange material juts out into space, fibrous and looped like a bridge of fire tethered to the surface. Fainter, more diffuse arches are visible along the left limb as well. The image is both scientifically sharp and dramatically lit, an almost portrait-like view of a star in violent activity.

How to look at itCómo mirarla

Start with the whole solar disk, then focus on the intense white flash on the right limb, the core of the flare. Follow the reddish loop just below it, the ejected material, and contrast it with the softer plumes on the left. Notice how the vivid palette is a scientific color translation that makes invisible extreme ultraviolet light perceptible.

ContextContexto

This view was captured on October 2, 2014, by NASA's Solar Dynamics Observatory, a mission managed by the Goddard Space Flight Center. Source data describe it as an M7.3-class solar flare, a mid-level but powerful eruption on the standard classification scale. The bright flash appears on the Sun's right limb, with an associated burst of solar material erupting just below it. The SDO, launched in 2010, continuously monitors the Sun in multiple ultraviolet wavelengths to study solar variability and space weather. The file was published in the NASA Image and Video Library on December 8, 2017, credited to NASA/Goddard/SDO.

Curious detailDato curioso

NASA's Solar Dynamics Observatory captures an image of the Sun in different wavelengths every 0.75 seconds and has produced more data than any other NASA mission in history.

Questions to stay withPreguntas para quedarse

  1. How does seeing the Sun as an active, eruptive star change its familiar image as a calm source of light?¿Cómo cambia tu percepción del Sol al verlo como un cuerpo violento y dinámico en lugar de un disco estable?
  2. Where is the boundary between scientific documentation and aesthetic spectacle in images like this?¿Qué distingue a una imagen científica de una artística cuando ambas buscan asombrar?
  3. What does scale mean when a small flash in the image is actually larger than Earth itself?¿Cómo imaginarías el sonido o la escala de una explosión que podría envolver a la Tierra decenas de veces?

The conservatorLa restauradora

As a conservator I am fascinated that this image is not paint but captured light. The solar disk looks like fired enamel in deep reds, burnt oranges and incandescent yellow, all against an absolute black that makes the golden corona stand out. I notice the brilliant whitish flare on the right edge and, just below it, the fibrous loop of orangey plasma that seems to lift off. I wonder how to digitally preserve that boiling texture without losing the dark filaments or the delicate glow of the coronal plumes.

The amateur astronomerEl astrónomo aficionado

What excites me most is knowing we see the full face of the Sun as seen by NASA’s Solar Dynamics Observatory on October 2, 2014. That tiny whitish spot on the right limb is the M7.3 class flare, medium-high intensity, and just below it you can clearly see the arched prominence of ejected plasma. I picture SDO watching nonstop since 2010 to understand solar magnetism and space weather. It is pure science but it looks like art, with the boiling surface and the diffuse corona stretching like flames into darkness.

The eight-year-oldLa niña de ocho años

It looks like a giant toasted cookie floating in the dark! The Sun is all red and orange like bubbly lava and it has a little golden crown with hairs of light. On the right side there is a super white sparkle that shines a lot, like someone poked it with a tiny flashlight. Right below it a red hanging bridge is escaping into space. It scares me a little and makes me very curious, because it looks angry but pretty, like a fire dragon sleeping in the black sky.
