What you would seeLo que verías
Against a deep black background scattered with dozens of tiny, faint white stars, a nearly perfect gaseous sphere floats in the center and fills almost half the frame. Its outer rim is a rough, irregular shell of tangled filaments in intense red, burnt orange, ochre, and greenish yellow, brighter and denser along the upper and lower edges. The texture looks porous and fibrous, like incandescent smoke, coral, or a net strung with dark holes and knots that break its round outline. Inside, the material grows thinner and more translucent, shifting to smoky blue-gray tones that suggest depth and let the dark background show through. At the exact center shines a very small but intense blue-white point, surrounded by a soft blue halo that spreads in faint horizontal waves, as if light were pulsing gently outward. Nothing else intrudes — no planets, figures, or reference points — so the scale feels immense and uncertain. The overall impression is of a delicate, luminous bubble expanding in silence, fragile at the edges yet lit from within by a persistent core.
How to look at itCómo mirarla
Start with the small star at the center, then move outward through the translucent shell to its ragged rim. Notice that the brightest, densest material is at the edge, while the interior looks almost empty. That contrast shifts the reading: this is not a solid planet, but an expanding cloud left behind by an explosion.
ContextContexto
This is an artist's impression, not a direct photograph, of supernova SN 1993J in the galaxy M81, published by NASA/GSFC. According to the source, it formed in a binary system: a massive star lost most of its hydrogen envelope to its companion before exploding, producing a Type IIb supernova with unusually little hydrogen. After about two decades of searching, the Hubble Space Telescope identified the surviving companion through its ultraviolet glow, at the center of the expanding debris. It is described as a very hot, blue, helium-burning star. Its exact real appearance is not known; the image visualizes a scientific interpretation.

Curious detailDato curioso
The surviving companion was found through its ultraviolet glow, embedded in the fading light of the supernova itself — like spotting a small blue lamp still shining inside the ruins of an explosion.

From my workshop I focus on how this image is built. It is an artistic impression, not a direct photograph, imagining the remains of SN 1993J in galaxy M81. I notice the central sphere with its shell of reddish, orange and ochre filaments, porous like coral or smoke. At the center remains that bluish white dot with a soft halo. I appreciate how the deep black background lets those colors breathe and suggests a delicate material still expanding.

What excites me here is the binary story it tells. This type IIb supernova exploded after a massive star lost almost all its hydrogen to its companion. For twenty years we searched for that companion and Hubble finally found it by its ultraviolet glow. In the illustration we see it as that tiny blue dot at the center, a hot helium burning star that survived. The reddish and orange cloud around it is the ejected material still expanding outward.

It looks like a giant bubble of fire in space! Around it there are tangled red and orange threads, like a sparkly coral or a little burnt cotton candy. In the middle there is a very tiny blue star but it shines a lot, like a firefly with blue light. Everything is on a black background with white dots that are other faraway stars. I imagine the bubble keeps growing and growing without any sound, really slowly and gently.
