At the center, the solar disk fills almost the entire frame against a deep black space background. The surface looks like a bubbling, rough sea in burnt orange, intense red and golden yellow, with a grainy texture and filaments resembling incandescent lava or coral. A diffuse, pale yellow halo crowns the Sun's edge. On the left limb, near the visual equator, a very bright whitish burst stands out, with an irregular fan shape and arched threads projecting outward; this is the main flare. Smaller, elongated bright spots speckle the disk, especially in the lower half and along the right limb, where faint solar loops are also hinted at. The light feels self-generated, creating strong contrast between darker reddish zones and almost white energy cores. The scale conveys isolated immensity with no human reference, while tiny peripheral glints reveal the constant activity of the solar corona.
How to look at itCómo mirarla
First locate the intense white flash on the left limb and follow its golden trail. Then scan the disk to compare that focus with smaller brightenings and darker filaments. Notice how the corona's halo wraps the perfect circle and makes the burst look like a spark escaping.

According to source data, the image was captured by NASA's Solar Dynamics Observatory (SDO) on Aug. 24, 2014, when the Sun emitted a mid-level M5 flare peaking at 8:16 a.m. EDT on the left side of the Sun. Flares are powerful bursts of radiation; the source notes that harmful radiation cannot pass through Earth's atmosphere to the ground, but can disturb the layer where GPS and communications signals travel. M-class flares are ten times less powerful than the most intense X-class flares. Credit: NASA/Goddard/SDO, from the Goddard Space Flight Center via the NASA Image and Video Library.

Curious detailDato curioso
SDO observes the Sun continuously in multiple extreme ultraviolet wavelengths, allowing invisible flares like this M5 event to be colored and visualized for study.

What fascinates me most is the rough texture of the solar disk, like glowing coral or lava about to cool, with burnt oranges and deep reds speckled with golden yellow. At the center the brightness is almost white, pure, and around the edge there is a pale halo that seems to float over absolute black. You can sense the contained heat and the energy bursting from the left edge, with very fragile arched filaments I would need to shield from any external light if this were a real print.

Here we see the Sun as observed by the Solar Dynamics Observatory on August 24, 2014, with an M5-class flare right on the left edge, peaking at 8:16 a.m. Eastern time. It is a medium flare, ten times less powerful than an X-class, yet its whitish fan looks huge against the disk. I love that this is not an artistic rendering, but real light captured from space, reminding us that this radiation, while it does not reach the ground, can still disturb the layer where GPS and communications travel.

It looks like a giant burnt-orange cookie floating in the darkness, but it is boiling! It has bubbles everywhere and an edge that glows like melted sugar. On the left side a super bright white spark shoots out, like when you press a marker too hard and a crooked squirt comes out. There are little spots of light in other places too. I imagine it makes a huge boom sound, even though in space no one could hear it because everything is silent.
