What you would seeLo que verías
The image is a very wide, horizontal scientific illustration set against a black sky speckled with tiny white stars. A thin gray line runs across almost the entire width at mid-height, serving both as an axis and as a scale. At the far left, the Sun appears as a small, bright yellow circle; moving right, Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus and Neptune follow as minuscule beads of different tones —pale, bluish, reddish and gray— crowded into the first stretch. Their English names rise vertically above each point. Below the line, numbers mark 1, 10, 100, 1,000, 10,000, 100,000 and 1,000,000, each step ten times the previous one. The left side is wrapped in an olive-green, translucent bubble labeled 'Heliosphere.' Near 100, two white arrows point to 'Termination Shock' and 'Heliopause,' and a small red wedge below reads 'Voyager 1.' Beyond that, a huge, diffuse gray arc occupies the center-right: the 'Oort Cloud,' with a grainy, dusty texture. At the far right, two dim stars are labeled α-Centauri and AC +79 3888. The overall impression is of extreme compression on the left and an almost empty immensity on the right.
How to look at itCómo mirarla
Start at the Sun on the far left and follow the line to the right, noticing how quickly the planets cluster together. Then look at the jump from 100 to 100,000: that nearly empty stretch changes the meaning of 'solar system.' Finally, find the tiny red mark for Voyager 1, almost at the starting line of that vastness.
ContextContexto
This artist's concept, credited to NASA/GSFC and dated December 8, 2017, in the NASA Image and Video Library, puts solar-system distances into perspective using a logarithmic scale in astronomical units (AU). One AU is the Sun–Earth distance, about 150 million kilometers; Neptune is about 30 AU away. According to the source, scientific consensus extends the solar system to the Oort Cloud, whose inner edge may lie near 1,000 AU and whose outer edge is estimated around 100,000 AU. Voyager 1, at around 125 AU in the description, is believed to have entered interstellar space on August 25, 2012.

Curious detailDato curioso
Although Voyager 1 entered interstellar space in 2012, it would still need about 300 years to reach the inner edge of the Oort Cloud and possibly some 30,000 years to leave it, according to NASA.

If you step closer you will notice the delicate work on the deep black background dotted with tiny white stars like dust. I am drawn to the thin gray line that organizes everything and to the translucent olive-green bubble of the heliosphere. The Oort Cloud at the center right looks grainy, like suspended dust, and it contrasts with the tiny planets clustered on the left. Everything is compressed so that immensity can fit inside, and that gives the whole piece a fragile, precious feeling.

This illustration is a clever visual trick: it uses a logarithmic scale to fit the impossible. On the left the yellow Sun and the eight planets look bunched together, even though Neptune is actually at 30 astronomical units. Then the scale jumps by tens up to one million. That is when you understand why the heliosphere is just a small olive-green bubble and the Oort Cloud takes up almost everything. The tiny red mark for Voyager 1, near 100, reminds us how little we have actually traveled.

It looks like someone stretched space like a rubber band. On the left everyone is squeezed together: the yellow Sun and its little colored planets, like marbles in a row. Then there is a whole lot of nothing, just a line with numbers that get huge: 1, 10, 100, 1000. Further on there is a giant gray cloud that looks like fog and at the very end two tiny stars called Alpha Centauri. It makes me giggle and feel a little dizzy to see everything so empty!
