A vertical, nighttime photograph dominated by darkness. At the center, a rocket has just lifted off and rises in a straight column of intensely bright white-yellow flame, so overexposed that its core loses detail and bleeds into a pinkish-violet halo around it. Above the flame, the rocket itself is only a tiny curved glint of light; thin rays streak upward into the black sky from that point. The lower part of the exhaust turns orange and golden where it emerges from a dense, billowing cloud of smoke that spreads sideways across the ground, grey-brown and backlit from within. The terrain is flat and covered in snow, pale and slightly pink under the reflected glow, with tyre tracks or a cleared path curving in at bottom right. In the middle ground, a few small, dark, barely defined structures sit near the smoke: low rectangular blocks in the foreground center, a thin pole with a small light on the right, and faint shapes that may be vehicles or equipment. Behind them, a nearly invisible line of dark forest melts into the night. In the immediate foreground, a horizontal railing and the silhouettes of low vegetation cut across the bottom edge. No people are visible; the scale is conveyed only by the landscape and installations dwarfed by the fire.

How to look at itCómo mirarla

Follow the column of fire from the snow up to the small bright point of the rocket, and then notice how the darkness swallows everything beyond it. Look for the aurora promised by the title: it is not clearly visible here, and that absence shifts the focus to the launch itself. The low smoke, lit from within, is where the power of the moment is concentrated.

ContextContexto

According to NASA, this image shows the launch of the GREECE mission — Ground-to-Rocket Electrodynamics–Electron Correlative Experiment — on March 3, 2014, at 6:09 a.m. EST, from Poker Flat Research Range in Alaska. It was a sounding rocket, funded by NASA, sent on a flight of about ten minutes straight through an aurora, reaching its highest point over the village of Venetie. Ground-based imagers in Venetie tracked the aurora while the rocket's instruments took measurements from inside it. The goal was to understand how the curl-like structures, compared by the source to swirls of cream in coffee, form in the aurora. The photograph was credited to NASA/Christopher Perry and published by NASA in 2017.

Curious detailDato curioso

Despite the mission's purpose, the aurora is not distinguishable in this frame: the brightness and glare of the exhaust overwhelm the night sky, making the rocket's own light the only visible phenomenon.

Questions to stay withPreguntas para quedarse

  1. What does it mean to study a phenomenon as fleeting as the aurora by flying straight through it for only ten minutes?¿Qué significa estudiar un fenómeno tan breve como una aurora atravesándolo en un vuelo de solo diez minutos?
  2. How does the absence of a visible aurora in the image change what you expect from the title?¿Cómo cambia tu lectura de la imagen que la aurora del título no se vea?
  3. What does the contrast between the tiny ground installations and the column of fire say about the scale of this kind of science?¿Qué dice el contraste entre las instalaciones diminutas y la columna de fuego sobre la escala de este tipo de ciencia?

The conservatorLa restauradora

If you look closely, this photo holds a fragile balance between light and darkness. The white and yellow column of fire is overexposed and has lost detail, with a pinkish and violet halo opening into the black sky. Below, the dense grayish smoke, with brownish tones, still traps the orange and gold of the exhaust. The pale snow reflects that faint pink glow. As a conservator I wonder how to preserve those blown-out whites without dulling the brightness, and those deep blacks without losing the forest and silhouettes.

The amateur astronomerEl astrónomo aficionado

What you see is not a big orbital rocket, it is a sounding rocket from the GREECE mission that launched on March 3, 2014 at 6:09 in the morning from Poker Flat in Alaska. It flew for just ten minutes straight through an aurora borealis, with its highest point over Venetie. I love to think that while this orange trail crossed the snow and night, cameras in Venetie tracked the curls of the aurora and the onboard instruments measured those swirls inside, which they compare to cream in coffee.

The eight-year-oldLa niña de ocho años

It looks like the snow is catching fire! There is a giant jet of white and yellow fire in the middle of the night and everything else is super dark. The smoke makes a big gray cloud over the white ground. At the bottom you can see a little railing and some tiny plants as if we were peeking from a hiding spot. There are no people, just tiny little houses and a pole with a little light. I imagine the super loud noise and the cold on my feet, with the black sky swallowing the tiny rocket.
