What you would seeLo que verías
A night photograph taken with a fisheye lens that bends the horizon and sky into an enveloping semicircle. Across the center and to the right, a broad curtain of boreal aurora glows in intense emerald green, with diffuse veils and vertical folds hanging from the black sky. The green fades toward the edges into paler, yellowish tones where light scatters. From the lower left corner, a luminous trail rises, thick and warm white at its base at the launch point, narrowing to a sharp golden line as it crosses the aurora. Higher up, near the center, a second shorter and fainter trail appears with a slight gap, corresponding to another phase of flight. The ground is brown tundra partly covered with snow, with low mounds and rough textures faintly lit; a small settlement with dim lights is suggested. The sky is deep black, dotted with faint stars. The rocket’s light creates a halo and reflection on the snow, producing a dramatic contrast between technology and natural phenomenon.
How to look at itCómo mirarla
First follow the bright rocket trail from its incandescent origin until it fades into darkness. Then rest your eyes on the green auroral curtain and see how the rocket light cuts through and tints it. Notice the second upper trail: it marks motion and the brief duration of the flight.
ContextContexto
According to NASA/GSFC information, the image shows the launch of the GREECE mission — Ground-to-Rocket Electrodynamics – Electron Correlative Experiment — on March 3, 2014, at 6:09 a.m. EST from Poker Flat Research Range in Alaska, reaching zenith over Venetie. It is a NASA-funded sounding rocket to study classic curl structures in the aurora, described as swirls like cream in coffee. The project combined ground-based imagers in Venetie with direct measurements from the rocket inside the aurora during a flight of about ten minutes. Image credit: NASA/Christopher Perry. No further specific author data is provided in the source record.
Curious detailDato curioso
Auroras occur between 60 and 200 miles high when energized particles strike oxygen and nitrogen; the characteristic green comes mainly from oxygen at about 100 km altitude.

Questions to stay withPreguntas para quedarse
- How does it feel to see a sharp human-made trail crossing such a vast natural phenomenon?¿Qué te hace sentir ver una traza humana tan nítida cruzando un fenómeno natural tan vasto?
- Why do you think scientists need to measure the aurora from inside it and not just photograph it from the ground?¿Por qué crees que los científicos necesitan medir la aurora desde dentro y no solo fotografiarla desde tierra?
- How does your sense of scale change when you see the tiny snowy landscape beneath the illuminated sky?¿Cómo cambia tu percepción de la escala al ver el paisaje nevado y diminuto frente al cielo iluminado?

I pause on how the light has been trapped: the emerald green of the aurora stays intense at the center and washes toward the edges in pale yellows, typical of a long exposure in extreme cold. The rocket trail, warm and thick at the bottom, becomes a thin golden thread above, and its halo reflects on the snow. The fisheye lens curves everything and bends the horizon, so I watch that contrast between the deep black sky and the icy matter of the tundra.

This shot thrills me because it joins sky and laboratory: it is March 3, 2014 at 6:09 a.m. EST, a GREECE sounding rocket launched from Poker Flat Research Range in Alaska to fly right into the aurora and measure its curls and swirls. A camera in Venetie tracked it toward zenith during a flight of about ten minutes. We see two trails, the main thick one and a fainter one above, crossing the green curtain hanging like luminous plasma.

It looks like a giant green blanket hanging in the sky! The night is black and suddenly that green light appears with little wrinkles dangling down. From a little corner the rocket goes up leaving a sparkly tail like golden glitter, first chubby and then super skinny. Below there is brownish snow with little bumps of frozen grass. The sky is curved as if you see it inside a bubble and everything glows a lot, like magic with science.
