What you would seeLo que verías

The image is a circular fisheye night photograph, as if the entire sky were enclosed in a dark bubble surrounded by black. At the center, filling most of the frame, a vast curtain of aurora borealis glows in intense emerald green, with translucent veils, folds and undulations forming an elongated arch. Toward the lower left edge the light concentrates and turns almost whitish-yellow, with fine vertical columns resembling luminous fringes. The green softens at the margins, revealing through its layers a deep bluish-black sky dotted with hundreds of small white stars. Around the perimeter of the circle the earthly horizon appears very dark, with low silhouettes of hills and, on the lower left and right edge, tiny warm dots of artificial lights from a settlement. No rocket or people are visible, only the atmospheric phenomenon. The light is soft and ethereal, without harsh shadows, and the texture of the aurora recalls illuminated gauze or smoke floating. The scale feels immense and cosmic, conveying stillness and wonder before a living sky.

How to look at itCómo mirarla

First follow the great green arch from side to side, then notice the stars shining through the veil and the contrast with the tiny settlement lights on the rim, which reveal the human scale against the phenomenon.

ContextContexto

According to NASA / GSFC data, the image is linked to the GREECE mission — Ground-to-Rocket Electrodynamics – Electron Correlative Experiment — photographed in the early morning of March 3, 2014, over Venetie, Alaska, after a launch at 6:09 a.m. EST from Poker Flat Research Range. The NASA-funded sounding rocket mission flew for about ten minutes through the heart of the aurora, combined with ground-based imagers in Venetie, to study classic curl structures in the aurora, described as swirls like cream in coffee. Auroras form when solar particles generate electric currents and strike oxygen and nitrogen some 60 to 200 miles up, releasing light. Image credit: NASA / Christopher Perry.

Curious detailDato curioso

The image was taken with an all-sky camera in Venetie to track the aurora from the ground while the rocket sampled it from within during a flight of only about ten minutes.

Questions to stay withPreguntas para quedarse

  1. How does your perception change knowing this light comes from particles colliding more than 90 kilometers high?¿Cómo cambia tu percepción al saber que esta luz proviene de partículas que chocan a más de 90 kilómetros de altura?
  2. What do you feel seeing such a vast natural phenomenon framed in a small dark circle?¿Qué te hace sentir ver un fenómeno natural tan grande capturado en un círculo pequeño y oscuro?
  3. How do you imagine the coordination between ground instruments and a rocket inside the aurora?¿Cómo imaginas el trabajo coordinado entre instrumentos en tierra y un cohete dentro de la aurora?

The conservatorLa restauradora

As a conservator I am struck by how this early-morning photograph retains such delicacy. The emerald green of the aurora stretches like translucent gauze and lets the deep bluish-black sky full of stars show through. I notice the perfect fisheye circle and how toward the lower left the light turns almost whitish-yellow with vertical fringes. The image shows no rocket, only the phenomenon, and that reminds me that even soft light must be documented and preserved.

The amateur astronomerEl astrónomo aficionado

What you see is a full sky dome captured with a fisheye lens over Venetie, Alaska, in the early hours of March 3, 2014. That intense green curtain is illuminated oxygen between 60 and 200 miles high, when solar particles precipitate and create electric currents. NASA’s GREECE mission launched a sounding rocket from Poker Flat at 6:09 a.m. EST to fly through the aurora and study its curls, those swirls like cream in coffee, together with ground cameras.

The eight-year-oldLa niña de ocho años

It looks like the sky is dancing! I see a giant green cloud making waves like a magic curtain or glowing smoke. Down to the left it shines brighter, almost yellow, with little lines hanging like fringes. All around it is very dark and there are so many tiny white stars. At the very edge you can see little houses with warm lights. There is no rocket or people, just the living sky. It feels calm and makes me want to keep watching for a long time.
