What you would seeLo que verías
The image is a horizontal mosaic of six contiguous vertical strips, each showing the same moment of the Sun in a different wavelength against the deep black of space. Each strip crops roughly a quarter of the solar disk on its left edge, revealing the curved limb and a subtly granular texture. From the limb erupts a brilliant outburst, a knot of white light with fiery filaments expanding outward. Colors shift by panel: the first in pale gold and muted olive with a pinpoint white flash and a small detached wisp of material; the second in incandescent red and orange with flaming arches; the third in golden yellow with fine, diffuse coronal loops; the fourth in intense blue with more ethereal structures and a thin vertical streak; the fifth in bright lime green; the sixth in turquoise-cyan. Light is most intense at the flare core, softening into halos and faint tendrils rising into the corona. At the bottom of each panel a small white label indicates wavelength: 1600 Å, 304 Å, 171 Å, 335 Å, 94 Å and 131 Å. The composition is symmetrical and comparative, inviting side-by-side examination of the same energy through different filters.
How to look at itCómo mirarla
Start with the central white brightness repeated in every panel, then compare how the arches and plasma clouds change with color. Look closely at the leftmost panel, where detached hovering material floats apart from the disk; that detail reveals matter being expelled into the corona.
ContextContexto
According to source data, these are images from NASA's Solar Dynamics Observatory (SDO) taken on Feb. 24, 2014, around 7:25 p.m. EST, capturing the first moments of an X4.9-class solar flare that peaked at 7:49 p.m. EST. X-class denotes the most intense flares, with the number indicating relative strength. The six views correspond to different wavelengths of extreme ultraviolet light, revealing different layers and temperatures of the solar atmosphere, especially the corona. SDO provides continuous monitoring of the Sun to study activity and its effects. The source notes that harmful flare radiation cannot reach the ground through Earth's atmosphere, but intense flares can disturb the layer where GPS and communications signals travel.

Curious detailDato curioso
SDO captures an image of the Sun every fraction of a second in multiple wavelengths, producing about 1.5 terabytes of data per day, one of the largest daily data volumes of any NASA mission.

As a conservator I am fascinated that this mosaic is not meant to be pretty but useful. It shows six vertical strips of the same instant on February 24, 2014, each through a different filter of extreme ultraviolet light. I notice how the white core of the X4.9 class flare stays stable while the color of the surrounding plasma changes. NASA's SDO does not paint, it records temperatures and layers. My job is to preserve that information without retouching the flash or its halos.

For me this panel is pure heliophysics in action. I see the solar limb on the left and the same burst expanding in six wavelengths: 1600 Å, 304 Å, 171 Å, 335 Å, 94 Å and 131 Å. Each color is a different temperature of the corona. SDO captured the first moments around 7:25 p.m. EST, peaking at 7:49 p.m. I love knowing that even though this X-class radiation does not reach the ground, it can still affect GPS and communications when it is very strong.

It looks like the Sun is blowing six different light bubbles. In each strip the background is black like space and the Sun is just on the little side, on the left, going boom with a super strong white light. One strip is red like fire, another yellow, another blue, another green and another turquoise. At the bottom there are numbers with a tiny A. I like to count them: one, two, three, four, five, six times the same angry Sun but in colors.
