A Monster in the Milky Way: The Center of Our Galaxy in InfraredUn monstruo en la Vía Láctea: el centro de nuestra galaxia en infrarrojo

What you would seeLo que verías
The square image is filled edge to edge with thousands of luminous points, like fine glitter scattered over a dark surface. There is no horizon, foreground, or empty sky: stars of very different sizes and brightness crowd together across the whole frame. Most are tiny white, cream, or pale golden specks, so numerous in places that they merge into a grainy, sandy texture. Among them stand out larger blue and white stars, several with a cross-shaped sparkle of diffraction, especially toward the lower right and the edges. A brighter, milky band crosses the center diagonally, where the stellar density appears greatest and the glow becomes almost cloudy. That light is interrupted by irregular patches of deep brown and near-black, like ink stains or shadows among the stars, concentrated in the lower right, lower left, and scattered across the upper half. Warm copper, amber, and reddish tones predominate around those dark areas, contrasting with the cool blues. Some points look sharp and isolated; others form a diffuse dusting that requires calm looking to distinguish individual stars. The overall scale is disorienting: there is no human or familiar reference, and what appears to be flat texture is in fact immense depth.
How to look at itCómo mirarla
First let the overall glitter absorb you, without looking for a recognizable shape. Then seek the dark, almost empty patches and contrast them with the bright band across the center. Finally, pause at the exact middle of the image: what is most important there cannot be seen.
ContextContexto
According to the source, this is an image of the star-filled center of the Milky Way toward the constellation Sagittarius, published by NASA on December 8, 2017. It uses archival infrared data from the Hubble Space Telescope's Wide Field Camera 3, taken in September 2011. Infrared light makes it possible to see through much of the dust that blocks this region at optical wavelengths. Right at the center lies Sagittarius A*, the supermassive black hole around which astronomers have observed stars orbiting; it remains invisible in the photograph. Credit: NASA, ESA, and G. Brammer.

Curious detailDato curioso
Sagittarius A* has a mass of about four million Suns, yet in this image it produces no visible point of light at its location.

Three guides, three ways of lookingTres guías, tres miradas
The conservatorLa restauradora
If you look at this like a conservator, the first thing is texture. Thousands of white, cream and pale gold specks packed so tightly they look like sand or glitter on a dark ground, interrupted by almost black brownish patches breaking the milky glow at the center. That is cosmic dust. I love the large blue and white points with little diffraction crosses, especially at the lower right, because they show how the infrared light from Hubble's Wide Field Camera 3, from September 2011, cuts through what would otherwise be opaque to our eyes.
The amateur astronomerEl astrónomo aficionado
As an amateur astronomer, this view toward Sagittarius both disorients and thrills me. It is a square frame filled edge to edge with no horizon, where the diagonal luminous band is the heart of the Milky Way. I know from the record that it was released by NASA in 2017 and that right at the center lies Sagittarius A*, the supermassive black hole, even though it remains invisible. What I do see are cool blue stars and warm amber tones around dark dust, an immense depth that infrared finally lets us glimpse.
The eight-year-oldLa niña de ocho años
It looks like someone sprinkled giant glitter all over a black sheet and shook it a lot. There are tiny white and golden dots everywhere, so many they turn into a little cloud, and bigger blue ones that shine with a little cross shape at the lower right. In the middle there is a milky light crossing diagonally and dark brown stains like chocolate smudges. They tell me there is an invisible monster at the center that makes stars spin, but I just see a huge crowd of little stars huddled together.
