What you would seeLo que verías
A square black-and-white scientific photograph taken from above shows part of Mercury’s surface. Most of the frame is occupied by a huge vertical oval of solid black, slightly displaced to the left, which covers more than half the image and reaches from top to bottom. It is the shadow inside a crater, so deep that no detail can be seen on its floor. Around it, the illuminated terrain is light gray, rough and pitted. On the left runs a narrow, uneven strip of crater rim, dotted with tiny hollows. On the right, the surface is broader and brighter, almost white where sunlight strikes it directly, and it fades into darker grays toward the edges. Dozens of small craters of different sizes perforate this area like bubbles or pockmarks; some are crisp circles and others are soft depressions. Midway up the right side, a bright protrusion juts into the blackness: it is the crater’s central peak. Below it, its shadow forms a dark, angular, nearly diamond-shaped patch surrounded by a finely speckled texture. There are no people, plants, colors, or sky. The contrast between absolute black and powdery gray gives the surface an ashen, fragile feel, while the overall scale remains hard to grasp without scientific context.
How to look at itCómo mirarla
Start with the great black oval: it is not empty space, but the crater floor hidden in shadow. Then look for the small protrusion on the right and its diamond-shaped shadow; that is where the image gets its title. Finally, scan the lit rim and count how many tiny craters fit inside this single landscape.
ContextContexto
According to NASA, this is an unnamed crater in Mercury’s northern volcanic plains, photographed at high resolution by the MESSENGER spacecraft, the first mission to orbit Mercury. The low Sun near the horizon plunges much of the crater into shadow. Rising from its floor is a central peak, a small mountain created during the impact that formed the crater; this morphology lies between a “simple” crater and a “peak ring” crater on Mercury. The image was a targeted observation, taken at much higher resolution than the 200-meter-per-pixel global base map. It was published on December 8, 2017. Details beyond this scientific description are not known from the source.

Curious detailDato curioso
A central peak is not debris piled up in the middle: it forms when the surface, compressed by the impact, rebounds upward after the collision, like a frozen splash.

- What do we imagine when we look at a darkness about which the image tells us almost nothing?¿Qué imaginamos frente a una oscuridad de la que la imagen casi no nos dice nada?
- How does our perception of this landscape change when we learn that the small lit mound casts that diamond-shaped shadow?¿Cómo cambia nuestra mirada cuando sabemos que esa pequeña saliente iluminada es la que proyecta la sombra en forma de rombo?

The conservatorLa restauradora
What captivates me about this photograph is the radical contrast between absolute black and dusty grays. As a conservator, I think about how fragile this document is: a black and white image taken from above by the MESSENGER spacecraft. The dark oval covers more than half the frame and hides the floor of the unnamed crater in the northern volcanic plains of Mercury. I pause at the bright central peak peeking out, with its diamond-shaped shadow, surrounded by tiny craters like pinpricks.
The amateur astronomerEl astrónomo aficionado
This image thrills me because it shows exactly what NASA aimed to capture: an unnamed crater on Mercury grazed by a very low Sun. As an enthusiast I know MESSENGER was the first mission to orbit that planet, and that this targeted view from 2017 has much higher resolution than the base map of 200 meters per pixel. I see the central peak halfway up on the right, a mountain born from the impact, between a simple crater and a peak-ring crater. Its brightness slicing through shadow is pure physics.
The eight-year-oldLa niña de ocho años
It looks like someone made a giant hole in gray clay and painted the inside black. You cannot see anything at the bottom! I like to hunt for the tiny little holes on the right, they look like bubbles. In the middle, there is a small white mountain poking into the darkness, it is the central peak, and below it has its shadow shaped like a kite. This photo was taken by a spacecraft called MESSENGER on Mercury. I wonder if everything there is silence and dust.
