What you would seeLo que verías

The image offers a high, sweeping view of the Aletsch Glacier in Switzerland as it winds in a broad S-curve through a mountain basin under a clear, deep blue sky. In the foreground, a dark, jagged rocky outcrop in brown and slate gray anchors the composition and provides a sense of scale. From there, the glacier unfolds toward the distant horizon like a frozen river several kilometers long; its surface is heavily textured with transverse crevasses, longitudinal dark stripes of medial moraine, and wavy flow patterns that trace the movement of ice. The ice appears in off-whites, pale bluish grays and streaks of rocky debris. Steep, boulder-strewn valley walls flank the glacier, dotted with patches of snow and sparse alpine vegetation. On the right-hand slope, pale trimlines are visible against the darker rock, marking the former ice height. In the background, sunlit snow-capped peaks form a crisp, luminous skyline. The light is bright daylight, casting soft shadows and emphasizing the contrast between the cool, fractured ice and the warm mineral tones of the surrounding rock.

How to look at itCómo mirarla

Start with the dark rocks in the foreground to grasp the human scale against the vast ice. Follow the dark-banded curve of the glacier into the snowy distance. Then focus on the pale lines on the right valley wall: that subtle trace reveals how much thicker the ice once was.

ContextContexto

According to source data from the NASA Image and Video Library, the image titled Glaciers and Sea Level Rise was released on December 8, 2017, credited to Frank Paul of the University of Zurich via NASA/GSFC. It depicts the Aletsch Glacier in Switzerland, the largest valley glacier in the Alps. The source description notes that volume loss since the mid-19th century is clearly visible from the trimlines on the right side of the view. Catalogued as a photograph / scientific image in the Space and science category, it was created to illustrate how glacier retreat contributes to sea level rise, a key topic in NASA Goddard Earth Science outreach. No additional authorship or capture details are provided.

Curious detailDato curioso

The Aletsch Glacier stretches for about 23 kilometers, making it the longest glacier in the Alps, and has been a UNESCO World Heritage site since 2001, with its retreating ice leaving clear trimlines used to track long-term mass loss.

What holds my attention is the texture of ice and rock: the glacier is not pure white, but a dirty white crossed by bluish grays, dark moraines and deep crevasses. From the rough ridge in the foreground you can read accumulated time. On the right, those pale lines on the rock, the trimlines, are the physical trace of volume lost since the 19th century. The image needs no retouching to understand decay: the surface itself already documents the loss.

The amateur astronomerEl astrónomo aficionado

I see this S-shaped frozen river as a natural observatory. The photo, published by NASA Goddard in 2017 and credited to Frank Paul of the University of Zurich, uses Aletsch, the largest valley glacier in the Alps, to explain something planetary: how receding ice feeds sea level rise. The striations, moraines and trimlines on the right are measurements without instruments. For me it is Earth science seen from above, as eloquent as looking at a distant star.

The eight-year-oldLa niña de ocho años

It looks like a giant frozen river curving like a snake between mountains. In front there are brown and gray rocks where I am standing to look. The ice looks wrinkled, with cracks and black lines of dirt. On the sides there are mountains with little snow and above a very blue sky with no clouds. They told me some pale streaks on the rock to the right show how far the ice used to reach, like a mark of how much it has shrunk!

  1. #1

On the right side of the valley, what are the pale lines that mark how far the ice used to reach called?

    HintPista

Look at the rocky slope on the right, they are pale marks that reveal the glacier's former level.

  2. #2

If you count the tones describing the ice, what dirty color dominates alongside bluish grays and dark moraine streaks?

    HintPista

It is not the pure white of fresh snow, it is the white of rough ice mixed with debris.

  3. #3

What shape does the glacier form as it winds between the mountains seen from the rocky viewpoint?

    HintPista

Follow the frozen river with your eyes from the foreground to the snowy peaks in the background.
