What you would seeLo que verías

The image shows the towering, near-vertical calving front of the Perito Moreno Glacier dominating the center and left side of the frame. It is an immense wall of ice, tens of meters high, with jagged, spire-like peaks, deep crevasses and irregular, sculpted facets that look almost architectural. The ice is not plain white: pale icy blue, light grey-blue and bright sunlit white blend together, crossed by dark sediment veins and diagonal fracture lines that scar the surface. Bright, direct sunlight illuminates the upper edges while deeper grooves remain in cool bluish shadow. The sky above is clear, vivid blue and cloudless. At the base, the glacier meets a greyish lake with slightly rippled water and small chunks of floating brash ice near the contact line. To the right and in the background, the ice front extends far into the distance, becoming a lower, serrated horizon of broken blocks that emphasizes the monumental scale and continuity of the southern Patagonian ice field.

How to look at itCómo mirarla

Start with the huge ice tower in the foreground and trace its diagonal cracks and dark veins. Then compare its height to the water and floating fragments to grasp the scale. Finally, shift your gaze to the distant right where the front continues as a serrated horizon, revealing its vastness.

ContextContexto

According to the source data, the photograph depicts the calving front of the Perito Moreno Glacier in Argentina and comes from the NASA Image and Video Library, credited to NASA/GSFC and Etienne Berthier, Université de Toulouse, dated December 8, 2017. The source caption notes that, contrary to most glaciers of the southern Patagonian ice field, Perito Moreno is currently stable and is one of the most visited glaciers in the world. The image was shared to illustrate the contribution of glaciers to sea level rise. No further details about the shooting conditions are provided in the source.

Curious detailDato curioso

Unlike most Patagonian glaciers that are retreating, Perito Moreno is known for remaining in relative equilibrium, with well-known periodic advance and rupture cycles.

Questions to stay withPreguntas para quedarse

  1. How does the sheer scale of ice against water and sky make you feel?¿Qué sensaciones te produce la escala del hielo frente al agua y al cielo?
  2. How does knowing that this seemingly stable glacier is part of a climate-sensitive system change your reading of the image?¿Cómo cambia tu percepción al saber que este glaciar, aunque estable hoy, forma parte de un sistema vulnerable al cambio climático?
  3. What do the ice’s color and texture suggest about the time and pressure that created it?¿Qué te dice la textura y el color del hielo sobre el tiempo y la presión que lo formaron?

I focus on the texture of this ice front. I see an immense, broken wall with peaks, ridges and diagonal cracks that look like scars. I notice the shades: not pure white, but pale blue, greyish light blue and luminous white, with dark sediment veins. Direct light creates highlights on the edges and bluish shadows in the hollows. Below, the grey lake holds small floating fragments. I think about how fragile it is to preserve this living surface, stable for now, against time.

The amateur astronomerEl astrónomo aficionado

As if looking at a distant planet, I observe this ice cliff under a clear, cloudless blue sky. The intense light reveals almost architectural relief, with deep crevasses like frozen canyons. I love that this image comes from the NASA Image Library, dated December 8, 2017, credited to NASA/GSFC and Etienne Berthier. Unlike most glaciers in the southern Patagonian ice field, this one remains stable. A natural laboratory to understand sea level rise from space.

The eight-year-oldLa niña de ocho años

It looks like a giant ice castle! It has pointy peaks like dragon teeth and lots of little lines and cracks everywhere. Some parts are very white and others look light blue, like a popsicle. Up top the sky is blue with no clouds, and below there is a grey lake with little floating ice chunks like cubes. I like how it shines in the sun and makes little blue shadows. It is huge and looks cold but very pretty!
