What you would seeLo que verías
A vertical aerial view captures a valley glacier flowing in an elongated tongue from the top toward the lower center of the frame, confined between steep, rugged mountain slopes. In the foreground, the glacier terminus displays deep crevasses and fractured ice blocks, with intense bluish tones visible inside the shadowed fissures contrasting with the bright white of the surface snow. The ice tongue widens slightly at its end where it meets a flatter, snow-covered expanse, likely sea ice or frozen ground. On both sides, dark rocky walls in brown and grey hues appear partially snow-dusted and cast sharp shadows onto the ice. Toward the background at the top, the glacier connects to a smoother, broader ice cap that extends beyond the frame. Lateral sunlight from the left creates strong contrast between illuminated and shaded areas, revealing the rough texture of the crevassed ice, the softness of the névé in the accumulation zone, and the irregular topography of lateral moraines. Small detached ice fragments float near the terminus, emphasizing ongoing calving and movement.
How to look at itCómo mirarla
Start at the fractured terminus at the bottom and follow the ice flow upward to its source. Notice how sidelight emphasizes relief and how the deep blue of crevasses reveals ice thickness and density. Observe the contrast between dark rock and white glacier to grasp its scale and confinement within the valley.
ContextContexto
The image shows a small valley glacier draining from the Devon Island Ice Cap in the Canadian Arctic, as described by the NASA source. It was recorded on December 8, 2017, and credited to Alex Gardner of Clark University via the Goddard Space Flight Center (GSFC). The source links it to research on glaciers and their contribution to sea-level rise. Devon Island hosts one of the largest ice caps in the Canadian Arctic and is a key site for glaciological monitoring. No specific details about season or camera equipment are provided, but it is presented as scientific photography for Earth Science outreach and observation within NASA's mission.

Curious detailDato curioso
Devon Island is the largest uninhabited polar desert on Earth and its ice cap covers about 14,000 square kilometers; NASA and other agencies study it as a Mars analog due to its cold, dry terrain.

I pause at the glacier front, where the ice fractures into deep crevasses and blocks with bluish shadows. I see the contrast between the bright white of the surface snow and the intense tones inside the fissures, plus the dark brown and gray of the rocky walls enclosing the valley. The sidelight from the left reveals textures: the roughness of the cracked ice and the smoothness of the ice field above. It is a fragile record that calls for visual preservation and constant monitoring.

From this vertical aerial view, this valley glacier looks like a frozen river flowing down from the Devon Island ice cap toward a flat icy plain. It reminds me of observing from orbit: the scale, the sharp shadows and the slow but unstoppable flow. I know from the record that the image is from NASA, dated December 8 2017, linked to sea level studies. Seeing those lateral moraines and the smooth névé above is like reading the motion of a frozen world.

It looks like a giant melting popsicle sliding between two huge mountains! Up top it is all smooth and white, and down below it is all cracked with super deep blue stripes where you can see the shadow. The rocks on the sides are brown and gray and make long shadows. I imagine the little bits floating near the end are like ice cubes that fell off. I would love to touch the ice and feel how cold it is!
