What you would seeLo que verías

The image captures a towering pillar of interstellar dust and gas dominating the center of the frame, the unmistakable shape that gives the Horsehead Nebula its name. The cloud rises like a billowing column in warm hues of rusty brown, taupe and soft bluish gray, dense and opaque along its spine and thinning into delicate, wispy filaments at the edges. At the top it curls to the right into an arch that suggests a muzzle and a windswept mane, crowned by an intensely bright star whose glare scatters into spikes and a pale halo. The background is a deep inky night sky strewn with hundreds of stars — sharp white and icy blue pinpoints, some with clear cross-shaped diffraction spikes — and faint distant galaxies. To the lower left, a frothy, lighter region spreads like luminous sea foam, with pearly streaks and gentle shadows. The texture feels both solid and smoky, like frozen smoke or suspended sand, with a striking contrast between the dark, sculpted core of the pillar and the airy, translucent veil that lets background starlight shine through.

How to look at itCómo mirarla

Start with the dark central pillar and trace its arch at the top toward the brilliant star on the ridge. Then look to the fainter, cloud-like base and notice how background stars become visible through the thinner edges, revealing the nebula's three-dimensional structure.

ContextContexto

This image was released on April 19, 2013, by NASA and was taken with the Hubble Space Telescope, a joint NASA and ESA observatory. It was made in infrared light to mark the 23rd anniversary of Hubble's launch aboard Space Shuttle Discovery on April 24, 1990. The Horsehead Nebula, in Orion, has been known for more than a century and is typically dark and silhouetted in visible light, but appears more transparent and ethereal in infrared. Credit is given to NASA, ESA and the Hubble Heritage Team at STScI/AURA, and the image is part of the NASA Image and Video Library from Goddard Space Flight Center. No further details about the specific observation program are provided in the source data.

Curious detailDato curioso

Infrared light allows Hubble to peer through dust that looks opaque to human eyes, turning the famously shadowy Horsehead into a glowing, semi-transparent sculpture.

Questions to stay withPreguntas para quedarse

  1. How does seeing an apparently black shape become translucent alter our sense of what is empty and what is full in space?¿Qué cambia en nuestra idea de oscuridad al descubrir que una sombra cósmica es en realidad una nube traslúcida?
  2. Why do we name distant cosmic clouds after familiar animals, and how does that shape scientific imagination?¿Por qué una forma familiar como la cabeza de un caballo nos ayuda a recordar y explorar estructuras a años luz?
  3. What does it mean for a photograph to show light no human eye can naturally see?¿Cómo transforma la visión infrarroja, invisible para el ojo humano, lo que entendemos por fotografiar?

The conservatorLa restauradora

As a restorer I am fascinated by how this cloud of dust and gas looks both solid and fragile at once, like frozen smoke that frays into filaments at the edges. In Hubble infrared light the hidden column becomes translucent and reveals what in visible light is just opaque shadow. The ochre and reddish brown tones contrast with the deep midnight blue background. It is a reminder that looking with a different light reveals hidden layers, like when we clean an old varnish to find the original color underneath.

The amateur astronomerEl astrónomo aficionado

This is the famous Horsehead Nebula in Orion, but not as we normally see it dark and silhouetted. Here Hubble captured it in infrared and made it vaporous and pearly, commemorating its 23rd anniversary after its 1990 launch aboard Discovery. I love to spot the very bright star on the crest with its cross-shaped diffraction spikes and the deep field speckled with hundreds of white and bluish stars. It is proof that changing the filter changes the universe we see.

The eight-year-oldLa niña de ocho años

It looks like a giant smoke horsie floating in the night! Its head arches to the right as if it is about to neigh and its body is a wavy column in brown with bluish grays. Below there is light mist like sea foam and on top a super bright star lighting everything up. I like that the background is almost black blue full of tiny dots, like glitter. If it were a real animal, I think it would gallop very slowly among the stars without making a sound.
