What you would seeLo que verías

This is a high-altitude, black-and-white nighttime satellite view oriented with north at the top. Against a deep black background representing desert, the Mediterranean Sea at the top and the Red Sea on the right, a luminous, branching ribbon in white and warm gray traces the course of the Nile River. At the top, the light broadens into a dense, speckled fan marking the Delta, with an especially bright and compact core near its southern apex corresponding to Cairo; to the northwest a thin curved line along the coast marks Alexandria. To the south, the luminous trace becomes narrower and more winding, with clear meanders, bulges and a distinct kink near Luxor and then Aswan at the bottom edge. To the right of the delta two parallel luminous filaments outline the Suez Canal and, farther to the northeast, the bright patch of Tel Aviv is visible. The texture of the lights is grainy, like scattered dust, most intense in urban centers and fainter along smaller settlements. Small white labels identify Mediterranean Sea, Alexandria, Cairo, Suez Canal, Tel Aviv, Luxor, Aswan and Red Sea, and at the lower left a 50 km scale bar with a north arrow is included.

How to look at itCómo mirarla

Start at the top in the bright, flower-like delta and follow the luminous stem of the Nile southward to Aswan. Notice how the glow maps where people live and how the dark desert encloses it. Pause at the kink near Luxor and compare the intense white urban cores with the faint threads of smaller villages.

ContextContexto

The image was acquired on October 13, 2012 by the VIIRS instrument aboard the Suomi NPP satellite, a joint mission of NASA, NOAA and the U.S. Department of Defense, and released through NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center. It uses the day-night band, which senses light from green to near-infrared to capture city lights, fires, auroras and moonlight. According to source data, the Nile Valley and Delta cover less than 5 percent of Egypt's land but are home to about 97 percent of its population, explaining the striking concentration of lights. The scene was taken near a new Moon, so land and water appear almost uniformly dark. Credit is given to NASA/GSFC, with image processing by Jesse Allen and Robert Simmon.

Curious detailDato curioso

In this VIIRS view, NASA has compared the illuminated Nile to a giant calla lily with a kink in its stem near Luxor, a shape only fully visible from orbit.

This black-and-white image makes me think about care and fragility. Look at the deep black background, the desert and the Mediterranean Sea at the top and the Red Sea on the right, almost without light because it was taken near the new moon on October 13, 2012. On it, the bright dust marks where we live: the Nile valley and delta cover less than 5 percent of the territory but hold almost 97 percent of the population. The most intense light is in Cairo and Alexandria, and the trace narrows toward Luxor and Aswan.

From above, with north at the top, Egypt looks like a river of light. The VIIRS sensor on the Suomi NPP satellite, from NASA and NOAA, captures from green to near infrared. What you see in white and warm gray is not water, but urban lights. The Delta opens like a speckled fan, Cairo shines as a concentrated point at its southern vertex, Alexandria curves along the coast and to the south the Nile winds with meanders. To the right of the delta you can even see two filaments of the Suez Canal and the glow of Tel Aviv.

It looks like someone drew the Nile River with glitter on black construction paper! The bright ribbon makes curves and gets wider at the top, where the Delta is, like a flower made of light. If you follow the white line with your finger, you find brighter dots that are cities like Cairo. Everything else is dark because it is desert and sea at night. At the bottom there is a little ruler that says 50 km to measure and a small arrow showing where north is. I like counting the river bends.
