What you would seeLo que verías
At the center of the frame three overlapping impact craters form an unmistakable silhouette of Mickey Mouse’s head on Mercury’s rugged gray terrain. The largest crater at the bottom center forms the face, roughly circular with a jagged, raised rim and a shadow-filled floor; two smaller, nearly symmetrical craters above to the left and right serve as ears. Grazing sunlight from a low sun angle casts deep, pitch-black shadows inside each bowl while the sunlit rims glow in bright, almost white grays, revealing a rough, pitted and heavily cratered texture. In the foreground the triple-crater dominates, surrounded by countless smaller craters of varying sizes, with sharp walls, central peaks and degraded rings. The background is a continuous mantle of dark to light gray regolith, granular and dusty, with no atmosphere and no color beyond monochrome. Larger craters with elongated shadows appear at the top, with additional depressions cropped at the lower edge. The image is in high-contrast black and white, scientifically sharp, emphasizing topography and giving a strong sense of relief similar to the lunar surface.
How to look at itCómo mirarla
Start by locating the central three-circle silhouette, then notice how low sunlight sculpts the ears and face with shadow. Look at the stark contrast between absolute dark floors and bright, craggy rims. Step back to take in the dense field of tiny craters that speaks to the surface’s great age.

A scientific image from NASA acquired on June 3, 2012 by the MESSENGER spacecraft, the first ever to orbit Mercury, using its MDIS instrument. The scene lies to the northwest of the crater Magritte in Mercury’s southern hemisphere. The view is not map projected, so the larger crater actually sits to the south of the two smaller ones. The Mickey Mouse likeness is coincidental, created by the long accumulation of impact craters over Mercury’s geologic history. The image was taken as part of the high-incidence-angle base map during MESSENGER’s extended mission, with the Sun near the horizon to accentuate small-scale topography through long shadows, at an average resolution of 200 meters per pixel.

Curious detailDato curioso
During its one-year primary mission, MESSENGER returned 88,746 images and carried seven scientific instruments to unravel the history of the Solar System’s innermost planet.

What hooks me is the play of light and shadow. The very low Sun leaves absolute blacks inside the three craters and whitish rims that look like chalk. I see the rough and dusty texture of the regolith, full of scars, pits and broken rings. That central trio is a geological accident, but the high contrast turns it into a sharp and funny silhouette. As a black and white image, its power lies in the topography revealed by grazing light.

This is a perfect case of pareidolia on another world. Three impacts form Mickey's face: the large crater below and two small ones above like ears, on a heavily cratered gray plain in southern Mercury, northwest of Magritte crater. It was taken by NASA's MESSENGER probe on June 3, 2012, with grazing light to highlight the relief at 200 meters per pixel. There is no trick, just the long bombardment history of the planet closest to the Sun.

Mickey is hiding on Mercury! I see his head made of three holes in the gray ground. The face is the big circle at the bottom and the ears are two tiny craters on top. Everything around is full of more little holes, as if someone played at making craters with marbles. It looks black and white with very dark shadows because there is no air there. It makes me laugh that the most famous mouse shows up by accident on such a distant and bumpy planet.
