What you would seeLo que verías

This piece is a horizontal diptych of two false-color satellite views of the Pearl River Delta in southern China. Both frames share the same overhead composition: a branching delta flowing from the north into a broad estuary to the south. In the upper image from 1973, an intense, velvety red dominates, indicating vegetation; the pattern is organic yet marked by fine, regular agricultural grids resembling a mosaic. Rivers and channels appear in deep teal-blue, with lighter sediment near the mouth. In the lower image from 2003, pale, speckled gray spreads powerfully, especially along the eastern side and around river branches, marking urban areas. The red becomes fragmented, paler and more pinkish, retreating into patches. The light is flat and even, typical of orbital sensing, with no cast shadows. In the lower left corner of each panel a scale bar shows 3 mi with a north arrow, and in the lower right corner the year is labeled. The overall texture shifts from continuous and vegetal to granular and built.

How to look at itCómo mirarla

Start with the red of 1973 and trace the blue river arms down to the sea, then repeat the path in 2003. Notice how the urban gray does not appear as isolated dots but as a spreading constellation that fragments the vegetal red. Look closely at the edges where gray meets red, where the speed of change becomes visible.

ContextContexto

According to NASA GSFC data, the upper image was taken by Landsat 3 on October 19, 1973, and the lower by Landsat 7 on January 10, 2003. In 1979, China established two special economic zones around this delta north of Hong Kong. The pair illustrates the shift from a rural, agriculture-dominated landscape to a densely populated urban corridor and major manufacturing center. By 2010 the Pearl River Economic Zone had 36 million people. Landsat is jointly managed by NASA and the U.S. Geological Survey, which maintains a 40-year archive of freely available images.

Curious detailDato curioso

In this false-color rendering, the vivid red is not the land’s natural color but the infrared signature of healthy vegetation detected by Landsat sensors, while gray marks built surfaces such as concrete and asphalt.

  1. What do you feel when the same territory turns from red to gray in just three decades?¿Qué te hace sentir ver el mismo territorio transformarse de rojo a gris en solo treinta años?
  2. How does our idea of a map change when seen from orbit and across decades?¿Cómo cambia nuestra idea de mapa cuando lo vemos desde un satélite y en intervalos de décadas?
  3. What human stories — labor, migration, industry — can you imagine behind those gray patches?¿Qué historias humanas —trabajo, migración, industria— imaginas detrás de esas manchas grises?

Three guides, three ways of lookingTres guías, tres miradas

The conservatorLa restauradora

I pause on how the texture shifts from one panel to the other. In 1973 I see a velvety, continuous red of vegetation, with a fine mosaic of fields and rivers in deep petroleum blue flowing south toward the estuary. In 2003 that red turns paler and fragmented, broken by a mottled pale gray spreading across the east and along the river arms. The 3 mi scale bar and north arrow in the corner help me measure that loss with care.

The amateur astronomerEl astrónomo aficionado

What excites me is the zenithal view in false color. From above, the branching delta looks like a living system seen from orbit, with flat light and no shadows. The intense red is not the true color, but vegetation highlighted by the sensor, and the petroleum blue marks water and sediments. Comparing 1973 with 2003 in the same framing from Landsat 3 and Landsat 7 feels like time travel thanks to the open archive from NASA and USGS.

The eight-year-oldLa niña de ocho años

It looks like the delta is playing dress up. On top, in 1973, everything is plant red and river blue flowing like little veins down to the sea in the south. Below, in 2003, the city gray arrives like speckles eating up the red. I like hunting for the little north arrow and the bar that says 3 mi in the corner, and the year numbers on the right so I do not get lost.
