What you would seeLo que verías
At the center of a deep black void, an elongated and symmetrical luminous structure stretches diagonally across the frame. Two intense beams of whitish light tinged with soft pink and pearly hues pierce the haze, one toward the northeast and one toward the southwest, like twin searchlights cutting through darkness. At the core, hidden from view, the central star is concealed by a dense, irregular dark belt of dust that partially blocks the light. Radiating outward from this center are faint concentric rings in muted teal, smoky gray and pale green, expanding in translucent layers toward the outer edges like ripples on water. The texture is airy and gassy, with veils, filaments and cotton-like clouds overlapping with varying density. Along the margins, tiny orange and white stellar points speckle the blackness, especially in the upper and lower left corners and the lower right. The lighting is both focused and diffuse, with bright cores that filter through dusty gaps and softly fading edges, conveying immense cosmic depth and scale.
How to look at itCómo mirarla
Start with the two bright diagonal beams that look like searchlights. Then notice the dark central dust lane where the star hides and follow the translucent concentric rings expanding outward like light ripples.
ContextContexto
The image shows the Egg Nebula, a preplanetary or protoplanetary nebula captured by the NASA/ESA Hubble Space Telescope. According to the source data, the image was released on April 27, 2012, and credited to the Goddard Space Flight Center. Such nebulae represent a brief stage — lasting a few thousand years — in the evolution of stars like the Sun as they exhaust nuclear fuel, before becoming planetary nebulae. They are rare and dim, requiring powerful telescopes to be observed. The Egg Nebula was the first of its class to be discovered, less than forty years before the release date, and many aspects of these objects remain poorly understood.

Curious detailDato curioso
Although called planetary or preplanetary nebulae, they have nothing to do with planets: the name comes from their faint round appearance that resembled a planet through early telescopes.

The conservatorLa restauradora
As a conservator I am struck by the suspended matter in this image. I see translucent veils overlapping, with different densities and edges that fade into deep black. I focus on the central dark band, that irregular belt of dust that hides the light source and forces brightness to leak into two opposing beams. The greenish-blue concentric rings are like subtle varnishes, layers that record time. Everything feels both solid and ephemeral, like a gaseous watercolor I must look at without touching.

What excites me is knowing I am looking at a fleeting stage of a Sun-like star. This Egg Nebula is a preplanetary nebula captured by Hubble and released in 2012, a phase that lasts only a few thousand years before becoming a planetary nebula. I love the two luminous beams escaping through the poles of the dust belt, and the rings expanding like ripples. It is rare and faint, which is why we need powerful telescopes to see it. There is still much to understand.
The eight-year-oldLa niña de ocho años
It looks like a glowing egg floating in the darkness of space. In the middle there is a black band squeezing it like a belt, and from there two very bright lights shoot out to opposite sides, like giant flashlights. Around it you can see circles that look like ripples when you toss a stone in water, in green and light gray. Everything is soft and cloud-like. I like to hunt for the tiny orange and white stars shining in the corners, small but brave in the blackness.
