What you would seeLo que verías
A large circular impact crater dominates the center of this orbital grayscale image, seen from directly above. Its rim is rugged and terraced, with inner walls showing concentric steps; deep black shadows line the upper rim while bright, almost white highlights trace the lower edge, emphasizing height and depth. The flat floor inside appears smoother yet speckled, with a small cluster of central peaks and subtle ridges. Surrounding the main crater, the Mercurian plain stretches outward, rough and heavily bombarded, dotted with dozens of smaller craters ranging from tiny pinpoint pits to medium-sized bowls with crisp crescent shadows inside. The overall texture is grainy and dusty, like pulverized rock and fine regolith. Oblique, low-angle sunlight creates stark contrast, casting long shadows that sculpt every ridge and hollow. The palette is strictly monochrome, moving from near-white to charcoal black, with silvery mid-tones that give the terrain a stark, airless, and ancient feel.
How to look at itCómo mirarla
Start with the central ring and trace its shadows to sense depth, then let your eye wander to the scattered smaller craters. Notice how low sunlight alone models the topography in shades of gray and how each small bowl holds a perfect shadow. That interplay between the vast, empty plain and the repeated circular scars gives the scene its quiet power.
ContextContexto
According to source data, this is Dickens crater on Mercury, named for English novelist Charles Dickens (1812-1870), author of A Christmas Carol. The view was acquired by the MDIS camera aboard NASA's MESSENGER spacecraft, the first probe to orbit Mercury, as part of its high-resolution surface morphology base map with an average resolution of 250 meters per pixel. First released on December 21, 2011 and re-shared in 2017 by NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center, the image was presented with a holiday theme, likening the Mariner 10, MESSENGER, and BepiColombo missions to the Ghosts of Christmas Past, Present, and Yet to Come. Mercury, the innermost planet of the Solar System, preserves a dense record of impacts on its ancient surface.

Dickens crater is about 154 kilometers in diameter, and during its primary mission MESSENGER was scheduled to acquire more than 75,000 images to map over 90 percent of Mercury's surface, which had previously been seen only in brief flybys.

What holds me here is the texture. In black and white I see grays ranging from coal black to pure white, with terraced walls showing very dense shadows on top and almost silvery highlights below. That contrast reveals the relief and also its fragility. The surface looks granular, like compacted dust full of scars. I observe the smoother but mottled interior floor, with small central peaks. Each tiny crater around it is a mark that does not fade, and it reminds me that this image is also a record we must preserve exactly as the MDIS camera captured it.

For me this is Dickens crater on Mercury, seen from above by NASA's MESSENGER probe. What fascinates me is the grazing light that leaves elongated crescent shadows inside the small craters and highlights the terraces of the main wall. In the center I can make out that little cluster of peaks rising from the floor. The surrounding plain is completely peppered with impacts of all sizes. Knowing this photo, published in December 2011 with a Christmas nod to Charles Dickens, is part of a 250 meter per pixel map makes me feel like I am orbiting right along with it.

It looks like the moon but it is not! It is a giant crater on Mercury that looks like a huge swimming pool with steps all around. The top part is very dark and the bottom shines a lot from the sun. In the middle there are like three little rocks piled up, as if someone left their marbles there. Outside everything is pitted with lots of little holes, some tiny like dots and others bigger with a little shadow. I like it because it is in black and white and looks like chocolate with powdered sugar. I want to count all the craters!
