What you would seeLo que verías
A top-down false-color satellite view filling the frame with no horizon. The dominant feature at center-right is the huge lobed tongue of Malaspina Glacier in pale cyan, turquoise and white, patterned with swirling bands, delicate crevasses and dark moraine streaks that form concentric, wave-like lines recording ice flow. To its left, a narrower valley glacier curves downward with the same icy palette and fluid mottling. Surrounding both lobes is a broad expanse in deep garnet and rust-red — vegetation and sediment rendered in false color — with velvety texture and fine parallel ridges marking former moraine fronts. At the top, rugged mountains gleam with bright white snow and slopes in ochre, mustard yellow and burnt orange. Along the bottom edge, a thin coastal fringe in olive and mustard separates land from the deep navy blue of the ocean. The illumination is flat and crisp, typical of an orbital sensor, with no cast shadows; relief is read through color and texture rather than shading. The scale is monumental: the main lobe spans tens of kilometers across, like a frozen fan spilling onto the coastal plain.
How to look at itCómo mirarla
Start with the large pale-blue fan at the center and trace its curved bands as if they were growth rings. Then compare the ice to the intense red border that embraces it and notice how that boundary records advance and retreat. Finally look up to the snowy mountains to see where the flow originates.
ContextContexto
According to the source data, this is a NASA image acquired on August 31, 2000, distributed by the Goddard Space Flight Center (GSFC) via Landsat. It shows the tongue of Malaspina Glacier, the largest glacier in Alaska, located west of Yakutat Bay and covering about 3,880 sq km (1,500 sq mi). It is listed as a scientific photograph / imagery in the Space and Science category, processed in false color to highlight ice, rock, vegetation and water. No individual photographer is named; credit is NASA/GSFC. The view illustrates a classic piedmont glacier, where valley glaciers coalesce and spread onto a coastal foreland forming a broad lobe.

Curious detailDato curioso
In this false-color rendering the vivid red is not rock but dense vegetation growing on old moraines; Malaspina is so vast its lobe can be recognized from orbit and is widely used as a natural laboratory for glacier dynamics.

I focus on how false color helps us read what the eye would miss. That pale sky blue and turquoise is ice, but the dark wavy lines are moraines, dust and rock carried by the glacier. The deep garnet around the lobe is not red rock, it is vegetation and sediment in this palette. Notice the concentric striations and swirls: they are traces of slow movement. This NASA image from 2000 preserves a precise moment of a landscape that is constantly changing.

What fascinates me is the top-down view from Landsat, with no horizon or shadows. The whole frame is territory seen from above, with flat light from an orbital sensor. At the top, snow-covered mountains in bright white; at the bottom, the deep navy ocean separated by a thin mustard-colored coastline. In between, the huge lobe of Malaspina, tens of kilometers across, with a secondary valley glacier to the left. The colors are not natural, they are chosen to distinguish ice, rock, vegetation and water.

It looks like a giant ice cream that is melting! The glacier is light blue with white and has swirls like when you mix paint. Around it there is something red and garnet that looks like wrinkly velvet. At the top there are mountains with snow that shines a lot and at the bottom, very thin, is the dark blue sea. I like to trace the curvy little lines of the ice with my finger, it looks like the ice is dancing very slowly toward the beach.

In this false-color image, what garnet and rust-red color is the area with vegetation and sediment that surrounds the ice lobe?
HintPista
Look for the large velvety band that hugs the pale blue lobes on almost every side.
#2
How many main glacial lobes can you spot in the image: just the large Malaspina one or also another narrower curved one to its left?
HintPista
Look to the left of the large ice circle, there is another river of ice curving down from the mountains.
#3
If north is at the top, what is at the bottom edge of the image separating the land from the deep navy blue?
HintPista
Follow the ice downward to where the land ends and the sea begins.
