What you would seeLo que verías
This black-and-white orbital view shows a heavily cratered portion of Mercury’s surface, rendered in stark grayscale. In the foreground, circular impact craters of varying diameters dominate: some are small and crisp with bright, sunlit rims and pitch-black shadowed floors, while larger, more degraded craters appear truncated at the top and bottom right edges. Low-angle sunlight casts long, dark shadows that emphasize every rise and hollow. A network of sinuous ridges and wrinkle-like scarps meanders horizontally across the middle of the frame, forming subtle, winding crests with soft undulations. The surrounding plains are densely pitted with tiny craterlets and fine granular texture, suggesting a dusty, rocky regolith. At the very top, the curved rim of a large crater is partially visible, its terraced wall catching the light. Tones range from near-white highlights on crater rims to medium grays on flat plains and absolute black within shadows, producing high contrast. The overall impression is arid, airless and geologically ancient, a silent, sculpted desert seen from space.
How to look at itCómo mirarla
Start with the shadow-filled craters on the left and right, then trace the winding ridges across the center. Notice how low sunlight turns tiny topography into bold lines and how crater density speaks to the age of this landscape.
ContextContexto
Image acquired on March 29, 2011 by NASA’s MESSENGER spacecraft during its commissioning phase, shortly after it became the first probe to orbit Mercury on March 17, 2011. Taken with the MDIS instrument during a low pass over the north polar region, north of the bright rayed crater Hokusai, looking southward, it shows terrain never before seen by spacecraft. It displays smooth plains, ridges similar to those seen on flyby 3, and craters with long shadows typical of high latitude. Studying polar crater interiors for possible ices was a key science goal of the one-year primary mission to unravel the history of the Solar System’s innermost planet.

Curious detailDato curioso
MESSENGER’s MDIS camera used a pivot to capture this polar terrain even while the spacecraft was oriented differently.

I look at this scientific photograph in black and white and its material quality holds my attention: grays range from almost pure white on sunlit rims to absolute black inside shadows. I see granular regolith, microcraters and winding ridges that look like folds in pressed fabric. I am interested in how the grazing light reveals every relief and how the image preserves a terrain never seen before north of Hokusai crater. There is no color to restore, only contrast, texture and the trace of time on rock and dust.

This top-down view of Mercury excites me because it is exploration history in the making. It was taken on March 29, 2011 by NASA’s MESSENGER probe, just days after it became the first spacecraft to orbit the innermost planet on March 17. Using the MDIS instrument it looked south over the north pole, showing smooth plains and wrinkled ridges among sharp small craters and larger eroded ones. I think about the challenge of capturing those long high-latitude shadows while searching for clues inside the polar craters.

It looks like the Moon but it is Mercury and it is all pockmarked! I see lots of little holes that are craters, some tiny ones with really black shadows and other big ones at the edges. In the middle there are long wrinkles going across, like someone crumpled a blanket made of rock. Everything is gray, white and black, with no little plants or air, just dust and stones with light making super long shadows. I imagine walking there and jumping between giant craters without falling.
