What you would seeLo que verías

The image shows the surface of Mercury in black and white, filling the entire frame with no horizon or sky, like a rugged map seen from directly overhead. In the foreground, a densely cratered terrain dominates: craters of all sizes overlap, from tiny pinhole pits to large, eroded basins whose rims span nearly a quarter of the view. At the lower left, a dark-rimmed, terraced crater is cut off by the edge of the frame; its floor appears smoother and deeper. Toward the center and right, two young, brilliant craters stand out with bright ray systems spraying radially across the darker regolith, like chalk splashes. Oblique sunlight casts sharp shadows on raised rims and central peaks, revealing relief and depth. The texture is grainy and harsh, with tones ranging from charcoal gray almost black in shadow to pearl gray and intense white in the ejecta. There is no atmosphere, vegetation or human presence; only rock battered over billions of years. Subtle details — secondary crater chains and ghostly, nearly erased rims — emerge when looking calmly at the mottled background.

How to look at itCómo mirarla

Start with the two bright ray craters in the lower right quadrant; they are the luminous anchors. Then trace the large degraded basins to read the layered impact history. Notice how shadows on crater rims reveal topography without color.

ContextContexto

This is the first image of Mercury taken from orbit with MESSENGER’s Narrow Angle Camera (NAC), acquired on March 29, 2011, according to NASA/GSFC data. On March 17, 2011, MESSENGER became the first spacecraft to orbit Mercury. Its imaging system MDIS has two cameras: the NAC with a 1.5° field of view, seven times narrower than the Wide Angle Camera (WAC), and the WAC. MDIS is the only movable instrument on the spacecraft, mounted on a pivoting platform with a 90° range of motion. The image dates from the mission’s commissioning phase. The exact region shown is not specified in the source data.

Curious detailDato curioso

The NAC’s field of view is only 1.5 degrees, like looking through a very narrow tube, yet it captured this detailed view thanks to the MDIS pivot, the only moving part on the entire spacecraft.

I focus on the texture: a grainy black and white that goes from near-black charcoal gray in the shadows to pearl gray and intense white in the rays. I notice how the side light leaves crisp shadows on raised rims and central peaks, which tells me a lot about the relief. I see at the lower left that dark-rimmed stepped crater cut by the frame, and near the center two bright young craters with radial ejecta. It is pure rock, battered and with no atmospheric softening.

The amateur astronomerEl astrónomo aficionado

What excites me is that I am looking at the first orbital image taken by MESSENGER's Narrow Angle Camera on March 29, 2011, shortly after it entered orbit on March 17. I know MDIS is the only movable instrument, on a platform that pivots 90 degrees, and that the NAC has a 1.5 degree field, seven times narrower than the WAC. That is why the frame is filled with overlapping craters, secondary chains and dark regolith with no horizon or sky.

The eight-year-oldLa niña de ocho años

It looks like the Moon up close and all scratchy, like gray sandpaper. I see lots of little holes, some tiny like pinpricks and others so big they barely fit in the picture. At the bottom left there is one cut in half with a dark rim. In the middle there are two that shine a lot, as if someone splashed white chalk and its little rays spread like suns. Everything is gray, black and white, with no colors, no trees or people, just rocks with shadows.

    HintPista

Count the sun-like white spots that contrast with the dark gray.

  3. #3

At the lower left, what part of a crater is seen cut by the edge of the image, with a dark and stepped rim?

    HintPista

Look at the lower left corner: the circle is not complete and its rim is the darkest.
