What you would seeLo que verías
Against a velvety black background densely speckled with stars, an irregular, expanded cloud with diffuse edges floats like a luminous smoke bubble seen against the light. In the center and toward the left, an intense electric blue dominates, bright and cloudy, with lighter filaments that look like swirling hot gas. That blue is wrapped and crossed by emerald green veils and fine reddish streaks, especially pronounced along the left edge and at the bottom and right, where they form curved, translucent filaments like torn gauze. The composition is roughly oval and fills almost the entire frame, leaving only the star field around it. In the visual foreground, two very luminous points stand out near the bottom center, white with an orange halo, appearing as stars along our line of sight. In the background, hundreds of tiny dots in white, gold and reddish tones of varying sizes create depth and suggest interstellar dust. Light does not come from an external source but radiates from the cloud itself, with high contrast between the cool tones of the interior and the warm tones at the edges. The texture blends the soft, velvety gaseous core with the sharp, thread-like quality of the outer rims.
How to look at itCómo mirarla
Start with the bright blue at the center and follow how green surrounds it like an incomplete crown. Then look at the thin red filaments on the left edge, much more delicate and fragile, marking where the explosion collides with its surroundings. Finally notice the foreground stars at the bottom, which help convey the immense scale of the cloud behind them.
ContextContexto
This scientific image combines ground-based infrared data, shown in red and green, with X-ray data from NASA's Chandra X-ray Observatory, shown in blue. It depicts supernova remnant W49B, originally released on December 30, 2009 and distributed by NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center. According to the source description, Japan's Suzaku satellite detected X-rays produced when highly ionized iron atoms recapture electrons, identifying the object as a fossil fireball. Image credit is given to Caltech/SSC/J. Rho and T. Jarrett and NASA/CXC/SSC/J. Keohane et al. It is presented as a photograph / scientific image in the space and science category. No further cultural attribution is provided.

Curious detailDato curioso
The blue in the image is not visible to the human eye: it represents X-rays captured by Chandra and mapped to blue to reveal gas at millions of degrees left over from the stellar explosion.

Look at how the color layers coexist like glazes. The electric blue at the center looks like an intense, luminous wash, with very fine green and red veils floating on top, almost like torn gauze. I am drawn to the contrast between the velvety interior and the filamentary edges, especially on the left and below. Those colors are not decorative: red and green come from infrared and blue from X-rays, combined to let us see the invisible.

What you see is not just any cloud, it is what remains of a star that exploded. This is W49B, photographed in infrared and in X-rays from NASA's Chandra Observatory. The bright blue is very hot gas, and the red and green filaments are cooler debris expanding outward. The Japanese satellite Suzaku found there a rare signal of iron recapturing electrons, which is why they call it a fossil fireball. Two orange-tinged dots at the bottom are stars that just happen to lie along our line of sight.
The eight-year-oldLa niña de ocho años
It looks like a giant bubble of colorful smoke glowing in the dark. In the middle it has electric blue like burning ice, and around it there is green and red like broken streamers. It is floating among many tiny stars that look like little diamonds. At the bottom there are two very bright orange lights that look like eyes staring at you. I imagine someone blew a huge soap bubble in space and it slowly burst leaving these colors behind.
