What you would seeLo que verías

At the center of a velvety black void floats a luminous structure shaped like an eye or an interlocking hourglass. In the foreground, an intense white dot — the central star — is wrapped in a pale blue, translucent bubble with a veined, filamentary texture, like cracked ice. Around it overlap two broader lobes in pinkish, lilac and creamy orange hues, with bright rims and the look of blown glass or incandescent gas. In the background, eleven or more extremely faint concentric rings create a bull's-eye pattern expanding into darkness; each ring is the illuminated edge of a dust sphere projected onto the sky. Light is cool and diffuse in the outer halos and warm in the inner knots. Faint orange jets protrude to the upper right and lower left. A tiny reddish star appears isolated in the black emptiness to the left. The scale is cosmic, yet the sharpness makes every filament seem tangible. The palette shifts from icy blue at the core to peach and lavender outward, surrounded by deep space black.

How to look at itCómo mirarla

Start at the bright white central star and follow outward through the blue bubble to the pink lobes. Then pull your gaze back to catch the ghostly concentric rings forming the bull's eye; noticing their regularity shifts the reading from chaos to rhythmic pulse.

ContextContexto

The image shows the Cat's Eye Nebula, one of the first planetary nebulae discovered and one of the most complex known of its kind. The view was captured by NASA's Hubble Space Telescope Advanced Camera for Surveys and released by Goddard Space Flight Center in 2017. According to the source, its eleven concentric rings correspond to successive ejections of gas and dust from the central star, about 1,500 years apart. Each shell holds as much mass as all planets in our solar system combined. It is a planetary nebula, the final stage of a Sun-like star shedding its outer layers, not a stellar nursery. The exact cause of its regular pulses is still debated.

Curious detailDato curioso

Each visible ring is actually the edge of a full spherical bubble seen in projection, which is why it looks brightest along its outer rim, like a soap bubble in backlight.

Questions to stay withPreguntas para quedarse

  1. How does it feel to see a dying star create such symmetry and color?¿Qué te hace sentir ver una estrella morir creando tanta simetría y color?
  2. How does your sense of time change knowing each ring represents about 1,500 years of ejection?¿Cómo cambia tu percepción del tiempo al saber que cada anillo representa 1,500 años de expulsión?
  3. Why do we call a cloud of dying gas an 'eye' and what does that say about how we look at the cosmos?¿Por qué llamamos 'ojo' a una nube de gas moribunda y qué revela eso de nuestra forma de mirar el cosmos?

Three guides, three ways of lookingTres guías, tres miradas

The conservatorLa restauradora

When I get close to this image I think about how fragile everything that shines can be. That pale blue bubble at the center looks like cracked ice or blown glass about to shatter, with super fine veins that ask you to look slowly. The pinkish and lilac lobes around it have glowing edges like hot enamel. And in the background, those eleven faint rings on the velvety black make me think of layers of dust left behind by time, as if light itself needed restoration to keep telling its story.

The amateur astronomerEl astrónomo aficionado

What excites me most is that we are not seeing a birth, but a farewell. That ultra-bright white star at the center is a dying star similar to our Sun, and each of the eleven rings around it is an ejection of gas and dust that happened about 1,500 years apart. Imagine that each layer holds as much mass as all the planets in the Solar System combined. Captured by the Hubble Space Telescope and released in 2017, this planetary nebula reminds us that even an ending can be orderly, luminous and full of rhythm.

The eight-year-oldLa niña de ocho años

It looks like a giant cat eye watching us from space! In the middle it has a super bright little white pearl and around it there is blue and pinkish smoke shaped like wings. If you step back, you can see lots of little circles like a target for playing aim, there are eleven of them floating in the blackness. It scares me a little but I also want to touch it because it looks like glowing jelly. Do you think that huge cosmic kitty is winking at us?
