What you would seeLo que verías
This is a top-down satellite view of an icy landscape that looks like a frozen river of vast proportions. At the center, a luminous, striated tongue of ice curves downward from the upper edge toward the lower right, marked by fine parallel flow lines that convey slow deformation and movement. On either side, the terrain is rougher and heavily fractured, with jagged ridges, crevasses and blocky textures casting deep shadows in slate gray and dark navy blue. The palette is dominated by glacial blues, pale turquoise, pearly whites and shadowed indigo, with faint greenish tints toward the bottom. Low-angle light emphasizes topography: the margins of the central flow appear smooth and silky, almost like whipped cream, while the surrounding areas are coarse, pitted and eroded. Near the center-left a pronounced dark shadow marks where the ice drops about 400 meters, and toward the lower left there are concentric swirls, delicate veining and tiny dark specks that may be crevasses or exposed rock. There are no people, vegetation or horizon; scale is suggested only by the immense fold of ice and the fineness of its cracks.
How to look at itCómo mirarla
First trace the smooth central flow with its curving parallel lines moving like a river; then contrast its silky texture with the broken terrain on either side. Notice the large central shadow that marks the 400-meter drop, and how the cracks show the ice stretching and twisting in slow motion.
ContextContexto
According to the source data, the image was acquired on December 2, 2000 by the Landsat 7 satellite and released by NASA GSFC on December 8, 2017. It shows an icefall feeding Lambert Glacier in Antarctica, described as the largest glacier on Earth. The ice descends about 400 meters from the polar plateau and, though it appears solid, flows slowly like water, bending and cracking as it falls. The location is given in the Landsat Worldwide Reference System as Path 42, Row 133/134/135, centered at -70.92, 69.15. The image is part of the NASA Image and Video Library and illustrates the use of remote sensing to study glacial dynamics and climate change. Additional details about color processing are not specified.

Curious detailDato curioso
Lambert Glacier is over 400 kilometers long and up to 100 kilometers wide, draining about 8 percent of the Antarctic ice sheet; although it looks still, ice in this icefall can move several meters per day.

The conservatorLa restauradora
I pause on how the grazing light reveals texture: the central flow looks like whipped cream with soft parallel striations, while the lateral edges are rough, fractured and full of crevasses casting deep navy shadows. The palette of pearly whites, pale turquoises and slate grays feels fragile, as if any temperature shift could alter those tones. To conserve this image is also to preserve the memory of ice that, though it seems still, deforms slowly over time.
The amateur astronomerEl astrónomo aficionado
As a sky watcher, I see this zenithal view and think of other orbits: Landsat 7 captured this image on December 2, 2000 from space, looking down like an inverted telescope. That ice falling about 400 meters and feeding Lambert Glacier reminds me of planetary flows, of the cryosphere as a system we can monitor through remote sensing. The coordinates -70.92, 69.15 and WRS Path 42 give us a cosmic address to locate this frozen river in Antarctica.
The eight-year-oldLa niña de ocho años
It looks like a giant ice cream melting super slowly and forming a river of white and light blue cream. In the middle there are little stripes all together in a curve, like when you comb modeling clay. On the sides everything is rough with really dark shadows, like broken cookies. I like the part with tiny swirls and thin veins at the lower left. There are no people or trees, just huge ice moving without us seeing it, like frozen magic.
