What you would seeLo que verías

The image is horizontal and is dominated by a luminous, symmetrical form stretching across the center from side to side, set against a deep black background sprinkled with small stars. At the exact center shines an intensely bright white point, its glare spreading into a diamond shape; it is the light source for the whole composition. To the left and right, two large lobes emerge, like facing bubbles or wings, recalling a butterfly, an hourglass lying on its side, or two cones joined at their tips. Their edges are soft and translucent, with veils of green, turquoise, and blue near the middle that turn orange, pink, and red toward the ends. Inside each bubble, fine filaments, folds, and small bright patches can be made out, almost like veins in blown glass or soap bubbles; at the inner ends of both lobes there are irregular little rings of light. A more diffuse, reddish band runs horizontally through the whole structure and fades out of the frame. Above the center, a yellowish star stands out with a diffraction cross. The other stars are tiny white, green, or golden dots of very different sizes, giving a sense of scale and depth: the nebulous form seems to float nearby, immense, against a distant, still void.

How to look at itCómo mirarla

Start at the blinding white point in the center and then follow each lobe outward, comparing their shapes and colors. Notice how symmetrical—and yet how imperfect—they are: the filaments, knots, and small bright rings break the mirror effect. Finally, look back at the tiny background stars to feel the change in scale.

ContextContexto

According to its source, the NASA Image and Video Library, this 2015 image, credited to NASA/GSFC, shows the Twin Jet Nebula, also catalogued as PN M2-9. It is a striking example of a bipolar planetary nebula: instead of expanding as a sphere, its gas forms two opposite lobes. The source explains that such shapes tend to appear when the central object is not a single star but a binary system, and that the nebula is still growing. Measurements of that expansion suggest that the stellar outburst that formed the lobes occurred only about 1,200 years ago. The record does not state which telescope or instrument was used, so that detail is not known from this source.

Curious detailDato curioso

Despite their name, planetary nebulae have nothing to do with planets: the term is historical, from a time when they looked like small round discs through early telescopes.

Questions to stay withPreguntas para quedarse

  1. Why does a dying star system produce such an orderly, almost mirrored shape instead of a shapeless cloud?¿Por qué un sistema estelar moribundo produce una forma tan ordenada, casi de espejo, en lugar de una nube sin forma?
  2. What changes in our reading of the image when we know that those two lobes are still expanding?¿Qué cambia en nuestra lectura de la imagen al saber que esos dos lóbulos siguen expandiéndose?

The conservatorLa restauradora

As a restorer I focus on what is visible: an almost perfect symmetry stretching from side to side, with two lobes like opposing bubbles. At the exact center there is an intense white point with diamond-shaped flares. I love the translucent veils, with greens and turquoises near the center that shift to orange and red toward the edges, and those fine filaments like veins in blown glass. Everything floats against a deep black speckled with tiny stars.

The amateur astronomerEl astrónomo aficionado

What excites me is the story behind this 2015 NASA image: the Twin Jet Nebula, also catalogued as PN M2-9. It is a bipolar planetary nebula, not a sphere, but two opposing lobes made of gas. The record explains this shape often appears when there is a binary system at the center instead of a single star. It is still expanding and, by measuring that expansion, scientists estimate the outburst that created it happened just about 1,200 years ago.

The eight-year-oldLa niña de ocho años

It looks like a giant butterfly in space or an hourglass lying on its side! In the middle there is a super bright little star like a diamond and on the sides two huge wings with soap bubble colors, green, blue and orange with pinkish tones. If you look closely you can see thin streaks and glowing little rings. It is floating on a black background full of shiny dots, as if it were very close and the other stars were really far away.
