What you would seeLo que verías
The image presents a top-down orbital view of Mataiva Atoll floating alone in the deep, uniform blue of the South Pacific. At the center of the composition, the atoll forms an irregular oval ring, a delicate loop of land only a few kilometers across. Its outer rim is a thin band in pale beige, soft gray and muted green, with a speckled texture suggesting low vegetation, sand and exposed reef. Inside, it encloses a shallow lagoon in vivid shades of turquoise, aqua and emerald, partitioned by an intricate network of white ridges and dark lines: eroded coral reefs that create a maze of tiny pools and channels, like veins or a fractured mosaic. Beyond the ring, the open ocean is a dense, smooth navy blue, almost featureless, interrupted only by a few small, puffy white clouds in the upper left and lower center, casting faint soft shadows on the water. The light is crisp and even, typical of orbital photography, with no strong shadows, revealing subtle gradations in water depth and color. At the bottom edge a white strip bears the code ISS024E011914. The overall sense of scale conveys isolation and immensity: a minute jewel of land and shallow water surrounded by an endless sea.
How to look at itCómo mirarla
Start at the outer ring and move inward to the fragmented turquoise of the lagoon; that is where the story lies. Notice how the white ridges divide the water into hundreds of natural pools, a pattern that is geological rather than decorative. Then pull back to feel the disproportion between the tiny atoll and the vast ocean around it.
ContextContexto
Catalogued as ISS024-E-011914 and taken on 13 August 2010 by a crew member of Expedition 24 aboard the International Space Station, according to NASA / JSC source data. It shows Mataiva Atoll, the westernmost atoll of the Tuamotu Archipelago in French Polynesia, which forms the largest chain of atolls in the world. Source notes explain that an atoll is a ring-shaped island enclosing a lagoon, formed by the subsidence of a volcanic island and the persistence of surrounding coral reefs. Mataiva means ‘nine eyes’ in the Tuamotuan language, referring to nine narrow channels, and its lagoon is notable for the internal network of white ridges and basins. The atoll is sparsely populated, with a single village, Pahua, located by the only pass connecting the lagoon to the ocean.

Curious detailDato curioso
Seen from orbit, Mataiva lagoon looks like a labyrinth; those white ridges inside are ancient fossil coral reefs exposed within the lagoon that now form a network of about seventy basins, a formation that is very rare among Tuamotu atolls.

The conservatorLa restauradora
As a conservator I focus on what this photo managed to preserve from orbit, on August 13, 2010, with crisp frontal light that leaves no shadows and reveals every nuance of the water. I see the thin ring of land in beige and pale green and, inside, the turquoise lagoon divided by white ridges and dark lines of eroded coral. I am moved by that labyrinthine network forming ponds and channels, like a fragile mosaic we must learn to protect from time and the ocean.

From the International Space Station, Expedition 24 gave us this top-down view of Mataiva Atoll, the westernmost of the Tuamotu in French Polynesia. I love to imagine how a sunken volcano and centuries of coral growth created this incomplete ring floating alone in the deep navy of the South Pacific. The inner lagoon looks like an emerald and sky-blue maze, cut by white veins. With just a few cotton-like clouds around, you feel the immensity and absolute isolation of a tiny jewel seen from space.

It looks like a necklace or a donut floating in a huge very dark blue pool. In the middle it has turquoise water with little white lines that are corals and make tiny veins or maze paths. They say it is called Mataiva which means nine eyes because it has nine channels, as if the atoll were looking at you with many little eyes. I like that it looks super tiny and lonely in the huge ocean, with two little white clouds on top and bottom like pom poms. At the bottom it says ISS024E011914.
Abajo dice ISS024E011914.
