What you would seeLo que verías

A vertical night view of a sprawling urban area photographed from space, filling almost the entire frame against a deep black background. The city appears as a luminous mesh of dots and lines: straight avenues forming a regular grid, crossed diagonally by a warm, continuous main corridor that descends from the center toward the south. The brightest clusters concentrate in the north and center, with intense white and yellow glints suggesting commercial centers, highways and industrial zones, while residential neighborhoods show a dimmer, more scattered glow. To the north a dark, sinuous band marks a river, lined with lights on both banks. Around the urban fabric, the darkness of unlit land creates absolute contrast, with isolated luminous filaments tracing secondary roads. The texture is grainy, like a powered electronic circuit, with soft halos and diffusion caused by the atmosphere and long exposure. No people or individual buildings are visible; the scale is metropolitan, tens of kilometers across, seen from hundreds of kilometers above.

How to look at itCómo mirarla

First take in the whole luminous grid to feel its scale and density. Then follow the great diagonal that cuts across the city and see how it organizes the scatter of lights. Finally linger on the surrounding darkness and the dark river to the north: there the boundary between inhabited and uninhabited becomes visible.

ContextContexto

This image belongs to the Earth Observations series taken by the Expedition 35 crew aboard the International Space Station, dated March 25, 2013 and credited to Chris Hadfield in the NASA source data. It was captured as part of the Johnson Space Center Earth observation program, which documents geographic, urban and atmospheric phenomena from orbit. The original description identifies it simply as a view of city lights at night. The source data does not specify which city is shown, so its identity cannot be stated with certainty. Such night photographs are used for public outreach and for studies of light pollution and urban sprawl.

Curious detailDato curioso

From the ISS, about 400 kilometers high, astronauts take night photos hand-held with long exposures, so sharpness depends on tracking the orbital motion of the station.

  1. How does it feel to see a city reduced to a pattern of lights with no faces or streets?¿Qué te hace sentir ver una ciudad convertida solo en un patrón de luces sin rostros ni calles?
  2. Where do you think the city ends and why is darkness also part of the picture?¿Dónde crees que termina la ciudad y por qué la oscuridad también forma parte de la imagen?

From my craft I look at light and its fragility. This zenithal view from Expedition 35, dated March 25 2013, is a long-exposure night photograph taken from hundreds of kilometers up. I notice the halos and glows against the deep black background, caused by atmosphere and sensor, plus the grainy luminous texture that reveals the urban grid and that warm diagonal avenue crossing the frame. There are no buildings or people visible, only a lit mesh we must preserve as a document, caring for its contrast and color without inventing what is not seen.

For me this image is darkness and light pollution at once. The absolute black background shows how the city fills almost the whole frame with intense white and yellow spots in the north and center, and dimmer lights in residential areas. That dark sinuous band to the north is an unlit river, and the warm diagonal going south looks like a main highway. Seen from the International Space Station, it reminds us how from space we can trace urban sprawl and why we need to protect the night sky.

It looks like a giant switched-on circuit! I see thousands of tiny yellow and white lights making little squares like a game board, and a bright orangey line crossing diagonally like a toy car road. At the top there is a dark little snake that is a river with no lights. Everything sits on a super black background, as if the city were floating in space. You cannot see any people, just lights. I imagine they took it while floating very high up, from a station in the sky.
