What you would seeLo que verías
The image is an oblique nighttime view of a sprawling metropolitan area seen from orbit. At its center, a dense luminous grid stretches east to west: thousands of warm golden and white points and lines trace streets, avenues and highways in a near-orthogonal pattern. The brightest, most compact clusters mark the urban core and continuous highway corridors, while toward the edges the light becomes more scattered, with isolated patches and roads fading into darkness. To the north of the urban mass, a large black, unlit expanse corresponds to a body of water, likely a lake, whose shoreline is outlined by coastal lights. The upper and lower background remains pitch black, the void of night. No clouds are visible. The texture is grainy from the sheer density of lights: some zones glow diffusely from urban concentration, others show fine, straight filaments. The scale is vast; the city appears as an incandescent circuit floating over the dark Earth, with small peripheral glimmers suggesting suburbs and nearby towns. The contrast between the warm artificial glow and the deep black surroundings dominates the composition.
How to look at itCómo mirarla
First scan the luminous mass north to south to separate the dark water edge from the urban fabric. Then follow one of the brightest straight lines to see how it links center and outskirts. Finally notice the small isolated islands of light to the south: their scarcity is as revealing as the dense core.
ContextContexto
According to source data, this is an Earth observation taken by the Expedition 35 crew aboard the International Space Station on April 6, 2013, credited to astronaut Chris Hadfield and held in the NASA Image and Video Library with credit to NASA/JSC. The official description identifies it as a night view of city lights. Such images are part of the ISS Earth observation program documenting urbanization patterns, geography and human activity from low Earth orbit. The specific city is not named in the source record, though the coastal shape and grid suggest a major metropolitan area in the Great Lakes region of North America. The exact location is not confirmed by the provided data.

Curious detailDato curioso
During Expedition 35, Commander Chris Hadfield became widely known for sharing daily orbital photographs on social media, making ISS Earth observations some of the most viewed NASA images of 2013.

The conservatorLa restauradora
As a conservator I look beyond beauty and see the fragility of this file. This image from April 6, 2013, taken by Chris Hadfield during Expedition 35 and preserved by NASA/JSC, is a digital document we must protect without changing its original grain. I notice the extreme contrast between the deep black of emptiness and the warm golden and white lights that trace the urban grid. There are no clouds to veil it, just the electric weave of streets and highways floating over darkness, with a coastline cut by light facing a body of water.
The amateur astronomerEl astrónomo aficionado
For me this photo taken from the International Space Station is an inverted sky map. Instead of looking at stars, we look at our own urban constellations from orbit. I see thousands of golden dots forming an orthogonal geometry from east to west, with straight filaments of highways and compact cores of intense brightness at the center. To the north, the large black patch with no light is a body of water that outlines the coastline by contrast. It is the luminous footprint of the Anthropocene seen at continental scale, with no clouds to hide it.
The eight-year-oldLa niña de ocho años
It looks like the city is lit up like a giant Christmas tree on the floor! I see tons of little golden and white lights making tiny squares and super long stripes, as if someone drew streets with a glowing marker in the dark. The middle shines a lot and at the edges there are fewer scattered lights. At the top there is a very black patch with no lights that looks like a dark sea right next to the lights. Everything floats in the black of night, like a cookie with light sprinkles seen from way up high.
