I look at this photograph from April 8 2013 taken by Chris Hadfield during Expedition 35 on the International Space Station and I think about its preservation as a digital scientific image. Through my telescope I never see Earth like this, but this orbital view fascinates me. The photo shows night from very high up with the planets curvature clearly marked and above the horizon that thin blue line of atmospheric glow which is the airglow. Below the golden urban lights form intense patches and thin filaments that reveal cities and roads without showing individual buildings. Above, space is almost completely black with a single sharp white dot to the left. It is from April 8 2013, credit NASA JSC, and it conveys immensity and fragility at the same time.

It looks like Earth is sleeping with little lights turned on! I see lots of golden dots like yellow glitter on a black background, some really big and shiny at the bottom and others like little light paths. At the top Earth gets curvy and has an electric blue line that looks like someone painted it with a glowing marker. Higher up there is a lonely white dot in the black of space. I like to think this photo was taken by a real astronaut, Chris Hadfield, from his space home on April 8 2013 and that all the black parts are places without lights.
