What you would seeLo que verías

In the center of a vertical frame hangs the Russian Progress cargo spacecraft, seen from below at a slight diagonal, filling almost the entire height of the image. Its cylindrical body is wrapped in a wrinkled thermal blanket in dark gray and silver, with visible folds, tapes, and patches; near the top, the word «ПРОГРЕСС» appears in reddish-orange Cyrillic letters, flanked by the Russian flag and two mission patches. Above it, the white and metallic docking mechanism connects it to the International Space Station, stark against the absolute black of space. Midway down, two golden solar arrays extend horizontally like wings, their grid of small cells catching harsh sunlight. The white, slightly weathered engine nozzle at the bottom points toward Earth. The lower third shows the planet: a vivid blue arc with thin, feathery white clouds over ocean, the sunlit limb fading from bright blue to the deep darkness of space. The light is hard and directional, typical of a daytime orbital pass, casting sharp shadows across the fabric and highlighting every crease and rivet.

How to look at itCómo mirarla

Start with the Cyrillic name and the wrinkled thermal wrapping to grasp the craft’s scale and history. Then trace the golden solar wings outward and drop to Earth’s blue limb; notice how the blackness of space makes the blue glow.

ContextContexto

Photograph taken on July 25, 2013 by NASA astronaut Karen Nyberg, a crew member of Expedition 36 aboard the International Space Station. According to NASA’s original caption, it was an Earth observation image captured during a day pass, showing the Russian Progress vehicle packed with trash, sealed, and about to undock from the station at 20:44 GMT. Progress spacecraft are uncrewed freighters that resupply the station and are later used to remove waste before burning up in the atmosphere. The image is part of the Johnson Space Center’s Earth observation collection held in the NASA Image and Video Library.

Curious detailDato curioso

In service since 1978, Progress freighters both deliver supplies and dispose of up to 1.7 metric tons of waste when they make a controlled reentry over the Pacific Ocean.

From my profession I focus on the wrinkled thermal blanket that wraps the cylinder, with folds, tapes and patches in silver and dark gray that show use and the harsh sunlight in orbit. I notice the inscription in reddish orange ПРОГРЕСС, the Russian flag and the emblems, all on a textile that looks fragile but protects the spacecraft. I also observe the white, weathered nozzle and the golden grid-like panels that contrast with the absolute black of the background. It is a carefully preserved photograph that captures a technical and human moment.

The amateur astronomerEl astrónomo aficionado

This shot excites me because it joins two scales: the spacecraft in the foreground with incredible detail and the Earth below. The Progress cargo vehicle appears vertically, docked to the station by the white mechanism on top, with its two solar panels spread like golden wings reflecting the sun. Below is the white nozzle pointing toward the planet, and further down the blue arc of the ocean with white clouds and the thin atmospheric limb. The starless black of space makes the contrast stand out. It is a daytime pass over our planet seen from orbit.

The eight-year-oldLa niña de ocho años

It looks like the spacecraft is hanging upside down over Earth as if it were about to fall but it just floats. It is super long and wrapped in a wrinkly silver blanket that shines in the sun. It has two golden wings on its sides that are its solar panels and on top it says ПРОГРЕСС in red letters. Below you can see its little white tail which is the engine. And further down is Earth, very blue with white clouds that look painted. Everything around is super black, like nighttime in space. I like it because it looks huge and tiny at the same time.

  1. #1

If you look carefully, how many golden grid-like solar panels extend from the sides of the spacecraft?

    HintPista

Look at mid-height of the cylinder, they open to the left and right like shiny wings.

  2. #2

What color are the Cyrillic letters ПРОГРЕСС seen on the thermal blanket?

    HintPista

Look for the name on the upper part of the cylinder, next to the Russian flag, it is a warm tone that contrasts with the silvery gray.

  3. #3

In the lower third of the photo, what planet with oceans and clouds appears below the white nozzle of the spacecraft?

    HintPista

It is the intense blue arc with white clouds and the thin edge of the atmosphere lit by the sun.
