What you would seeLo que verías
A high-altitude, almost vertical view of a coastline crossing the image from side to side in its upper third. Above the shore lies the sea, shifting from a deep, hazy blue-gray at the top to turquoise and pale green near the coast, where faint streaks suggest sediment or currents. Below, the land fills most of the frame with a mottled texture of browns, ochres, olive greens, and dusty grays. Toward the center-left, a paler, denser web hints at an urban area, crossed by thin lines that may be roads. Near the center is an oval, muted blue-gray patch, likely a lagoon or bay, and along the shoreline small inlets and sandy edges break the line between water and land. Across the right half and lower right, dozens of small white cumulus clouds appear as bright cotton-like dots, casting only a faint sense of relief. A few similar cloud lines also rise over the sea on the left. The daylight is even and bright, with no sky or horizon visible. There are no people, labels, or familiar objects to set the scale, making the scene feel both geographic and abstract.
How to look at itCómo mirarla
ContextContexto
This photograph, titled *Earth Observation*, was taken on August 17, 2013, by Karen Nyberg during Expedition 36 aboard the International Space Station, according to the NASA Image and Video Library (credit: NASA/JSC). The source describes it as an Earth observation made during a daytime pass. A Twitter message quoted there says: “Hey, Houston, what were you doing an hour ago when I snapped this picture from #ISS?”, which suggests that the metropolitan area visible is probably Houston and its nearby coast. The image belongs to the long practice of orbital photography, useful both for scientific observation and for sharing the everyday experience of living in orbit. The exact boundaries of the area shown are not specified in the source.

Curious detailDato curioso
The International Space Station completes one orbit around Earth in roughly 90 minutes, so the “an hour ago” mentioned in the message is almost a full trip around the planet later.

I pause on how the even light preserves this view without dramatizing it, as if asking you to look slowly. Below, the mottled browns and ochres blend with olive greens and dusty grays that speak of dry land and sparse vegetation, while above the sea shifts from hazy grayish blue to pale turquoise near the shore. That lighter patch at center left, with its fine lines, looks visually fragile and makes me think about how delicate it is to preserve both the territory and the image itself.

From the International Space Station everything changes scale, which is why this photo from August 17, 2013 fascinates me. There is no sky or horizon, just Earth filling the frame in an almost vertical view. I recognize the Earth observation practice carried out by Expedition 36 crews, like Karen Nyberg, to document the coast and share life in orbit. What you see as streaks in the water are currents or sediments, and without people or signs it is hard to imagine how huge each detail really is.

It looks like a giant map with scattered candies! Down below there is land with lots of brown, ochre and green speckles like a puzzle, and up top the sea looks grayish blue turning turquoise right by the beach. I like to hunt for the little grayish blue oval spot in the middle that looks like a hidden lagoon and the little white clouds floating like cotton balls without casting shadows. Did you spot the lighter patch with tiny lines that they say is a city?

#1
If you look at the upper third, what color does the sea turn right where it meets the coast, different from the deep grayish blue at the very top edge?
HintPista
Look for the pale band hugging the shoreline where soft streaks appear.
#2
In the center of the image there is a small grayish blue oval spot surrounded by land, what geographic feature does the sheet suggest it is?
HintPista
Look at the center, not the coastline, it is an oval of water enclosed by land.
#3
What type of small white clouds, like cotton specks, dot the right half of the land and also appear over the sea on the left?
HintPista
They are white, small and fluffy, with no strong shadows.
